Are there schools offering all the IB Programmes?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) proposes a continuum of international education. All of its programmes(PYP, MYP, DP & CP) support and promote children’s personal and academic achievement. Schools willing to teach any of the IB programmes must be authorized by the IBO (The International Baccalaureate Organization). In order to teach each of the IB programmes, schools must be authorized. Every school authorized to offer one or more IB programmes is known as an IB World School.

Can Schools offer all the IB Programmes?

Experts Say:
A school offering a continuum of IB education will have a culture that reflects the IB values. The school will be international-minded and encourage students to ask questions, to take control of their learning and to become independent. The teachers and administrators will have a strong belief in the IB and be proud of their students.
Experts Say:
There is a lot of overlap and continuity between the three programmes, which helps to have a unified vision throughout the school. Some points of focus include the development of international mindedness, an education centered on inquiry and conceptual understanding, fostering certain character traits and skills, and idealistic values such as striving to make the world a better place.

What are the requirements for schools to propose all the Programmes?

In order for a school to become IB World School, each school has to go through an authorization process designed to support the school in making the decision; understanding the fundamentals of the IB programme; determining their aptness to implement the programme and planning to teach the programme in the long term.

What are the benefits to follow all IB Programmes?

Studying all the IB Programmes offers students and families a lot of benefits:

ARecognized programmes

All of them are recognized programmes throughout the world;

BInternational mindedness

It provides inquiry-based learning, international mindedness and action orientation which lead to outstanding academic results;

CTransferability

It guarantees transferability, cohesion, and continuity of learning;

DContinual research

It is supported by extensive and continual research into curriculum and pedagogy.

Experts Say:
Following three IB programmes ensures there is cohesion and continuity in the experience of the students who stay with us for a number of years. Schools that follow the IB and other systems at the same time can find themselves torn between different philosophies of education, and might need to spend a lot of time and energy combining different elements that are not always compatible. IB schools are able to follow one system and can then concentrate on their most important job: continuously improving student learning.

Experts Say:
The IB programmes are academically strong and following the three programmes supports a smooth continuum of learning. Schools find that students who have learned through the PYP, MYP, and DP are balanced, caring, independent and globally aware young adults who are ready for life at university and beyond. Doing all three programmes ensures familiarity with the structure and terminology of the IB and students who have completed the MYP better understand the expectations of the IB Diploma. The capstone projects for the PYP (the exhibition), MYP (Personal Project) and DP (extended essay) allow students to showcase their learning in each of the programmes.

Is studying all the IB Programmes the right choice for my child?

All the IB programmes offer holistic, inquiry-based learning. Furthermore, it focuses on international mindedness and on the perspective of developing individuals able to understand other cultures and to solve global problems.
Experts Say:
IB programmes are very adapted to our modern world because they foster children who can be actors on the global stage and who are comfortable in an international environment. Children learn to think, solve complex problems, apply what they learn to the real world, and understand concepts in depth. They also learn to be principled, moral agents who take action to improve the world around them.

Experts Say:
The best thing to do is to visit the IB school you are interested in and let them explain and show how learning works in the IB. Bring up any concerns and questions you have. Most students do very well in the IB and enjoy the colourful and challenging nature of the programmes.

Can you describe a school offering all IB programmes?
Our school, the Swiss International School in Qatar, is a candidate school to offer three IB programmes: the PYP, the MYP and the DP. This is also known as a “continuum school”. There is a lot of overlap and continuity between the three programmes, which has helped us a great deal in having a unified vision throughout the school. Some points of focus include the development of international mindedness, an education centred on inquiry and conceptual understanding, fostering certain character traits and skills, and idealistic values such as striving to make the world a better place.

What are the requirements for schools to propose all the Programmes?
We are coming towards the end of our IB authorisation journey for all three programmes and we have been really impressed with the high standards the IB is promoting in all three programmes. For example, collaboration between teachers is not just a recommendation, it is a requirement that schools must fulfil in order to become authorised IB schools. There is a whole IB philosophy schools must embrace before they can join the IB family officially, and the philosophy and practices that are promoted are current, innovative and grounded in educational research.
