Winter Adventures with the Alpine Institute: Skiing, Snowshoeing, and More!

As the winter season unfolds, students involved in the Alpine Institute program at Leysin American School in Switzerland have enjoyed participating in various outdoor programs! The Alpine Institute is an initiative at LAS that encourages students to spend time in the outdoors through organized activities and training such as avalanche safety and environmental conservation. This important program allows students to be more comfortable and confident in the outdoors and enjoy all that the Swiss Alps have to offer! Through these activities, students have been embracing the chilly temperatures and snowy landscapes with enthusiasm and courage. From backcountry skiing and snowshoeing to via ferrata and adrenaline-pumping climbing competitions, there’s something for everyone at LAS seeking adventure in the great outdoors!

The Alpine Institute caters to students of all skill levels, offering various weekend and afternoon trips throughout the winter months. Whether it’s a first-time outing or a challenging expedition for experienced adventurers, the institute makes sure there’s a program suited to every individual’s interests and abilities. One highlight of this season is the freeride ski program, which has attracted a record number of students this year. This intensive program includes 20 guided winter ski outings and in-depth training in avalanche safety and rescue techniques. Recently, members of this group tackled the legendary Vallée Blanche in Chamonix, a challenge that left them exhilarated and excited for more snowy adventures!

For those who prefer a less adrenaline-fueled connection with nature, the institute also organizes outings for nature lovers. In January, a group of students went on a snowshoeing expedition to Pra Cornet. Their journey provided an opportunity to observe winter animal habitats and further their understanding of tree identification. This fantastic experience allowed our students to become more in touch with the snowy landscapes they are so lucky to live amongst.

Despite some milder weather in recent weeks, students have seized the opportunity to tackle winter ascents of challenging peaks, including the summit of Les Diablerets, a distinctive landmark visible from LAS. These achievements show the determination and skill of the students involved, who have enjoyed challenging themselves and exploring new areas!

Coming up, the Alpine Institute has some really exciting events and adventures. Plans are in place to try out ice climbing, summit more mountain peaks, and deepen our connections with the natural world! Students have loved getting involved with the Alpine Institute throughout the winter season, and through this program, students have seen incredible landscapes, challenged themselves, and fostered connections with other students. Whether it’s carving fresh tracks or learning about winter ecology, there’s no shortage of experiences in this Alpine winter wonderland!
