From a student design competition to exclusive Beau Soleil skis

At Beau Soleil, we’re never short of ideas when it comes to creativity and our latest design competition embodied the ambitious nature of our school with the ‘Design your own Ski’ competition.

The Brief: design a ski that incorporates elements of Beau Soleil. The entries from the students were outstanding and it was difficult for our judging panel to choose the winner. Designs ranged from tartan skis inspired by Beau Soleil colours to a design featuring snowy raindrops. We had a huge range of entries and would like to thank them all for their submissions!

This winning ski was designed by one of our Grade 8 students, Harriet. She is a talented graphic design artist who worked on this design for a considerable amount of time. Harriet’s design is the outline of the famous Dents du Midi Mountain range, which is opposite Beau Soleil, that gives us the incredible sunsets we all know, remember and love. The tails have the school crest split across the skis consisting of a sun, a lion and a cross.

“I am a Grade 8 student at Beau Soleil. I started skiing when I first moved to Switzerland in 2019. My inspiration for the design came from the Dents du Midi mountains that we can see from school. They are an iconic symbol of Beau Soleil, and they look amazing when the snow first appears. The design process for the skis was challenging at times, but very interesting. I had a lot of different designs that I submitted to the competition. But the one they chose was this one. “

We were delighted when Bomber Ski, proposed to work with us and translate Harriet’s design onto a real pair of Skis! At Beau Soleil we want our students to receive the best possible holistic education and using a real-life example such as designing a ski all the way through to production is a wonderful business case that engages and inspires our students.

The design process wasn’t all plain sailing however, there was quite a bit of back and forth between bomber and Beau Soleil before Harriet’s skis were approved for the final production piece.

“My original design had to be changed slightly due to the curve of the skis and the placing of the bindings. The designs went back and forth a lot of times! I am so pleased with the final result and can’t wait to see them in person.”

Seeing the Beau Soleil skis come to reality was a proud moment for Harriet and our entire community. We were blown away by the quality and craftsmanship of Bomber. The skis are made in Italy, and are an all-round piste ski with great shape, a nice turning radius and a very enjoyable degree of stiffness which results in a responsive feel and clean turns.

Those who are familiar with the brand Bomber ski will know why these skis are that bit more special. Bomber skis have been developed and designed with former Olympic World Cup Champion Alpine Racer, Bodie Miller. With that in mind one of our ski teachers couldn’t resist testing our new skis out on the Villars ski slopes. Check out the video of our Beau Soleil skis in action!

And the best part… we have an exclusive range of Beau Soleil Skis available for our community and alumni to purchase, each pair can also be customised with your name or initials on the ski. The skis come in a variety of sizes from 156cm to 186cm and are available to purchase via our ski shop.
