Academic Collaboration: Applying Academic Study to the Real World

At Leysin American School in Switzerland, we believe in the practical application of academics. Our students are encouraged to think about how their studies can be applied to the real world and make a difference.

An essential part of education at LAS centers around the practical application of our academic programs. Our school offers various courses, from AP classes to the IB Diploma, allowing students to structure their learning in a way that best suits them. Through our curriculum, we encourage students to consider how their academics can link to the world around them and how they can use new knowledge and understanding to make an impact.

Group 4 Day at LAS endeavors to bring students from different science-based subject areas together to participate in a group activity that encompasses their learning across their IB Diploma subjects. Combining various courses allows students to observe different approaches to issues and teaches the importance of collaboration. By discussing with peers and linking their studies to real-world problems such as climate change and poverty, students are supported in finding creative solutions to complex problems.

At LAS, we value the expertise of our many visiting scholars each year, as we believe that learning from experts in the field presents students with scholarly viewpoints which they can then apply to their studies. Our visiting scholar for Group 4 Day was Alice Richard, who shared her research into the UN Sustainable Development Goals with our students. Through a card game based on the 17 goals, students made decisions to meet their personal targets and then observed the effect of these decisions on our global economy, society, and the environment.

At LAS, we work to empower young people to advocate for themselves and our planet. Encouraging students to consider their identities as Global Citizens allows them to combine their studies with the real world and gain the most out of their education. By working with others and combining studies, students learn the importance of collaboration and are inspired to make positive changes to our world.
