Two Colleges, One Vision

Greene’s College Oxford has added an exciting arrow to its quiver with an expansion to Portugal, offering a beautiful place to learn for its students

The expansion of Greene’s College in Oxford, to Estoril in Portugal, means that students now have the unique opportunity to study for their A levels both in Oxford’s beautiful city centre and in Estoril, a buzzing seaside town near Cascais, on the Portuguese Riviera.

Estoril was an exciting addition to Oxford, where Greene’s, founded under the name Edward Greene’s Tutorial Establishment, has been situated for well over 50 years.

Senior Tutor Matthew Uffindell commented: “If they wish, students can spend part of their time in Oxford and part in Estoril, experiencing very different cultures (and weather!), and without a break in their studies.”

Educational Oversight Inspection – Exceeds expectations

A recent testament to Greene’s, Oxford’s oldest tutorial college, was the glowing report received in 2021 from the Independent Schools Inspectorate, Educational Oversight Inspection.

The inspectors’ summary of findings stated that “The college exceeds expectations for the quality of education” and that “Teachers have excellent subject knowledge and are skilful in developing students’ confidence, analytical and independent learning skills. External examination results are excellent”. The full report is available on the college’s website.

Examination results – An exceptional year

2021 marked another exceptional year for Greene’s A level students, whose examination results have thrilled everyone, with 80 per cent achieving A or A* grades. This heralds a bright future for students who can progress to their first-choice university.

Tutorial teaching style benefits high achieving students

It’s no coincidence that each year Greene’s students secure competitive university places. At the heart of Greene’s method of teaching is tutorial education: individual one-to-one tutorials, supplemented by small groups of two or three students, and occasional larger seminars and lectures.  It is an approach that leads to independent study and the ability to succeed at the best universities.

Created around the tutorial system that has defined learning at the UK’s best universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, Greene’s College delivers high-quality, individualised tuition to students of any age and background, in a unique university-style atmosphere. Our tutorial method of learning ensures that every student has a distinctive programme of study, supported by an academic mentor, a Personal Tutor.

We help our students lay the foundations for success through personal development and self-awareness, developing lifelong skills as well as academic knowledge. The tutorial method of learning is key to this success. While we work with every student to achieve the educational goal of their choice, it is even more valuable to understand how success can be achieved by taking skills forward into any career. It is particularly exciting that we add so much value to all, benefiting students at all academic levels.
