Learning from Our Alpine Environment: LAS Alpine Institute and the Duke of Edinburgh International Award

Experiential learning, especially in the outdoors, is a hallmark of our programming at Leysin American School in Switzerland. Through our bespoke Alpine Institute program, in conjunction with the internationally-recognized Duke of Edinburgh Award, students challenge themselves, learn, and grow, exploring the extraordinarily beautiful Swiss Alps that surround our campus. Our students have the chance to explore the stunning Alpine environment while fostering passions in sustainability, global citizenship, and climate action.

The LAS Alpine Institute is a landmark program where students immerse themselves in the breathtaking natural beauty of Switzerland. We go beyond classroom learning, providing students with hands-on outdoor educational opportunities after school and on weekends. Our exceptional location and the expertise of our passionate staff enable students to not only access but also learn from the natural environment, something that can be missing from typical school travel itineraries.

Summiting a 4000m peak, ski touring over a glacier, rock climbing, backpacking, orienteering, camping, and studying the local ecology are just a sampling of what our Alpine Institute participants do. These activities are not only exciting and fun, they are also incredibly effective tools for learning. Students in these programs love being out in nature and, in turn, learn to care for the environment and take action to protect it.

One of the most challenging and rewarding experiences the LAS Alpine Institute offers is the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. This prestigious, multi-level award (Bronze, Silver, and Gold) allows students to develop their dedication, resilience, and commitment. The components of the awards include: community service, skills development, physical fitness, the Adventurous Journey, and the Gold project.

This past spring, six brave LAS students stepped out of their comfort zones and into the mountains as they completed the Adventurous Journey component of the Bronze level of the International Award. With backpacks full of food and equipment, the group hiked from campus across the valley to Champéry, tackling both the physical terrain and the challenge of independence that the program demands.

Beyond the Bronze level, our school is proud to have several students progress to the prestigious Gold level of the International Award. In June, two recent LAS graduates were recognized at a formal ceremony hosted by the British Embassy in Bern and attended by a delegate from the Royal Family. These students have been working on achieving this goal for several years and we are very proud of their dedication, passion, and perseverance. This upcoming year, a new group of seven Gold participants will begin their journey.

Whether it’s supporting students in their pursuit of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award or offering after-school and weekend hiking, climbing, and skiing trips, the LAS Alpine Institute encourages students to engage in our beautiful natural environment in a meaningful way. Thanks to the Alpine Institute, we foster in our students a sense of responsibility and connection to the natural world, and we empower them to become thoughtful stewards of the environment and agents of positive change.
