Recognized for Improving Female Representation in AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles
We are proud to share that Laurel Springs has earned the College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science A (CSA) and AP Computer Science Principles (CSP)! Schools honored with an AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have expanded access to AP computer science courses for female students in their communities. Laurel Springs is one of only 69 schools nationwide to be recognized for improving female representation in both AP courses, and the only accredited online private school to achieve this honor.
“We’re thrilled to congratulate our female AP computer science students and their dedicated teachers on this important step toward equal representation in computer science education,” said Head of School, Alyssa Tormala. “This is a huge testament to both the quality of the students we have and the quality of the instruction provided by our curriculum and teachers. We’re honored to have earned this distinction and cannot wait to see how these young women and others pursue and achieve success in their future endeavors.”
While important strides have been made, female students remain underrepresented in computer science, accounting for just 34% of AP Computer Science Principles participants and 26% of AP Computer Science A participants. By expanding access to computer science courses, Laurel Springs is helping to close this gap and empower young women to thrive in high-paying, innovative and creative fields.
“Computer science is the source code of our economy and much of the career landscape,” said Trevor Packer, head of the AP Program. “In the seven years since we began the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award, it’s been heartening to see schools like Laurel Springs welcome so many more young women into this vital field.”
At Laurel Springs, we’re passionate about providing all of our online students with access to self-paced computer science courses, virtual STEM programs, math competitions, leadership opportunities, and interactive events like STEM Fest that allow students to showcase their STEM knowledge and further develop creative problem-solving skills.
This College Board recognition underscores our dedication to fostering an inclusive, empowering, online learning environment where all students can thrive–particularly those underrepresented in STEM. We remain committed to equipping every Laurel Springs learner with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to create, lead, and shape a better future!
