At the US Performance Academy (USPA), we believe that diversity is not just a concept but a practice that enriches our educational environment. Our commitment to supporting neurodivergent students is exemplified through our innovative program: Guided Opportunities for Achievement and Learning (GOAL). Designed to cater to the unique needs of our neurodivergent students, it ensures that our learners thrive in both their academic and extracurricular pursuits.
Beyond Labels: Fostering Skills and Independence
At USPA, we recognize that every student learns differently, whether they are identified as neurodivergent or neurotypical. Our focus is on helping students develop skills and tools that align with their learning styles and personalities. Ensuring that each student can excel in their own way, GOAL provides individualized support in such areas as emotional regulation, executive functioning, and specific academic content.
A Neurodiversity Affirming Framework
Deeply rooted in a neurodiversity-affirming framework, our approach is a progressive method of supporting neurodivergent individuals. This framework aligns with the social model of disability, which views a disability as a social construct rather than a personal defect. Unlike the medical model, which categorizes individuals as “normal” or “abnormal,” the social model focuses on allowing students to thrive while removing societal barriers and promoting inclusivity, allowing students to thrive.
Language Matters
Language plays a crucial role in our framework. We respect the preferences of our students by using either person-first or identity-first language, depending on their personal preference. This approach acknowledges that a disability is an integral part of one’s identity. We believe in listening to our students and their caregivers, validating their experiences, and trusting their expertise in their own lives.
The GOAL Program: Tailored Support for Neurodivergent Students
USPA’s GOAL program is a testament to our commitment to embracing diverse learning profiles. Whether a student has a specific learning difference, ADHD, is gifted, twice-exceptional, or requires an accessible educational environment, we deliver customized, and intentional strategies . Our leveled support system provides 1:1 live sessions with the Head of Student Support, Learning Specialist, or Counselors, ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours weekly.
Empowering Through Universal Design for Learning
Carrie McGillicuddy, the Head of Student Support, and Pascale Fitts, Senior Learning Specialist, designed the GOAL program to ensure every USPA student gets the support they need to succeed. Carrie’s approach incorporates the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, which ensures that accommodations for neurodivergent students benefit all students. By offering options that work for our neurodivergent students to everyone, we create an inclusive learning environment that empowers all learners. Pascale asserts that, “by blending both academic and clinical support systems, Carrie has done an outstanding job at creating a safe and successful learning environment for all of our GOAL students. It’s an honor and a joy to work in a school that embraces neurodiversity seamlessly.”
A Collaborative Effort
The success of the GOAL program is a collaborative effort involving all stakeholders: teachers, learning coaches, tutors, clinicians, and parents. We value the input from trained clinicians by carefully reviewing psycho-educational evaluations. While we do consider previous IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) and 504 Plans as part of our intake process, these documents are not used in isolation. Instead, they serve as one component of a comprehensive, holistic evaluation that helps us determine the most appropriate level and type of support for each student. We craft our own Individual Service Plans (ISPs) to outline and implement support strategies tailored to each learner’s unique needs. To ensure each student receives the support they are entitled to, our teachers are trained to understand and apply these plans with care and precision.
“We could not be happier with our experience at USPA, especially the GOAL program. They took the time to understand our son’s academic abilities and recognize his intelligence and capacity. Supports were tailored to his needs and his schedule. He grew so much as a student during his time at USPA.”

Students interact with teachers as needed and meet with learning coaches weekly. Optional small-group sessions with support staff further enhance the learning experience. Parents have access to their students’ progress and can communicate with teachers and learning coaches, ensuring a holistic support system.
Education for Life
The flexibility and support provided by USPA not only facilitate impressive athletic and extracurricular accomplishments but also equip students with invaluable life skills. Our approach prepares students for the challenges of college and beyond, building the self-advocacy skills and self-confidence they need to succeed in all areas of life.
USPA’s commitment to supporting neurodivergent students through the GOAL program and a neurodiversity affirming framework sets us apart as a leader in inclusive education. By embracing diversity and fostering an environment where every student can thrive, we are shaping the future of education for all learners.
