During the Chinese New Year celebrations in 2024, the first SSIS Kungfu team made an amzing debut that left the audience in awe. What’s even more incredible is that this team was formed on short notice and had only 20 minutes of training time each week. Yet, they showcased breathtaking techniques and fluid movements that amazed everyone. The success of the performance sparked a desire among students to learn Kungfu at SSIS.
Kungfu Master at SSIS
The SSIS Kungfu team was led by Mr. Javier, the primary PE teacher. Mr. Javier’s journey with Chinese martial arts began at the age of 9, establishing a profound connection that persists to this day. Over the past ten years, he has diligently studied Tai Chi, Bagua Quan, and Xingyi Quan under the guidance of his Chinese Master in Shanghai.
Mr. Javier had an interesting experience about feeling the internal Chi. While many people discussed it, he had never personally experienced it until one day in Shanghai. He encountered a master who made him feel the true power of internal energy. The master’s gentle punch on Mr. Javier’s hand seemed to penetrate deeply, leaving him momentarily unable to locate his hand. This encounter opened his eyes to the reality of internal energy and its remarkable effects.
This incredibale experience made Javier made some change in his martial arts journey. While he had achieved success in fighting tournaments and performances in Spain, he gradually shifted his focus from external martial arts to internal arts like Tai Chi. This transition allowed him to explore the deeper aspects of martial arts
“In martial arts, like Kung Fu and Tai Chi, the key focus is on sensing your body and establishing a connection with your inner self. It transcends the physical aspect; it delves into your internal experience. This is valuable because it allows you to realize that external events do not solely dictate your reality. Your response to circumstances can be altered. You have the ability to maintain this practice consistently because it’s not contingent on the situation but rather on how you respond to it. This helps you achieve a true sense of balance within yourself.”
Sharing the Passion with Students
The first time Mr. Javier took the SSIS Kungfu team to the stage was during the 2024 spring holiday. Six boys showcased their skills, including some application movements. Despite having limited practice time, they were excited to learn something new. People were amazed and surprised by their performance.
Building upon their initial success, the SSIS Kungfu team took their performance to new heights during the International Family Day celebration. Not only did they have an expanded roster of talented members, but they also showcased more intricate martial arts routines.
“For the youngest students, I incorporated animal-inspired styles such as tigers, snake, monkey and crane because they find the different animal movements more enjoyable. As for the older teenagers, I introduced styles like Shaolin Quan or Chang Quan, which are considered really cool.” shared by Mr. Javier, “And respect holds great importance in Chinese martial arts. It’s truly remarkable how respect is always present among practitioners. “
With an increasing number of students showing interest in Kungfu, Mr. Javier aims to provide more opportunities. Starting from the 24-25 school year, he will open his Kungfu ECAs to Grade two and Grade three students. This decision was made in response to the younger students expressing their desire to learn Kungfu, as they previously couldn’t participate due to the ECAs being limited to middle school. By adjusting the age range, Mr. Javier hopes to give them the chance to learn Kungfu too. May everyone enjoy their journey to the fullest.
