What technology-based subjects does our online school offer?
Our online school offers a selection of technology-based subjects, including computer science, information and computation technology (ICT), and our new artificial intelligence course. Depending on the student’s age, not all subjects may be available, but most can be taken in secondary school and sixth form. We recommend taking at least one technology-based subject, as it helps broaden students’ curriculum and build essential transferable skills for their futures.
Computer Science
Our computer science curriculum focuses on teaching the core principles, including information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to apply this knowledge in programming. Students will build their knowledge and understanding of the subject as they are taught to use information technology to create programs, systems, and a range of content. Our curriculum ensures students will become digitally literate and able to express themselves and develop their ideas.
Computer science/computing is available for students in primary school, secondary school, and sixth form, aged 5 to 18. The course covers topics that prepare students for further education and build transferable skills for their futures, essential for the modern world. Topics covered include: computer systems, data transmission, developing for the web, Python programming, security and ethical issues, and more.
Information & Communication Technology (ICT)
Our ICT curriculum enables learners to understand the basic components, use, and application of different ICT systems and networks as they develop their skills to analyse, design, implement, test, and evaluate ICT systems. Students will explore the impact of current and new technologies on methods of working in the outside world. They will also develop the ability to recognise potential risks when using ICT and use safe, secure, and responsible practices.
Our ICT/information technology courses are available as a separate subject for IGCSE and A-level students, aged 14 to 18. Before this, ICT is combined as one subject with computer science. The topics covered in this course include: input and output devices, components of computer systems, storage devices and media, ICT applications, system lifecycles, and more.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Our artificial intelligence curriculum focuses on building an understanding of the applications of AI, how to use AI effectively, the positives and negatives of AI, and its overall impact. It is important for students to have an awareness of AI as it continues to grow, helping them to build essential technological skills for their futures.
Our artificial intelligence course is available for students in years 7,8, and 9, aged 11 to 14. The topics covered in this course include: the basics of artificial intelligence, AI systems, uses of AI, how computers learn, using AI safely, information processing by computers, automation, and more.
Why are technology-based subjects important?
Technology-based subjects are essential for students to study as the world continues to adapt and introduce new technology. These subjects build transferable digital skills for students’ futures, helping them become digitally literate and confident users of technology.
