Reading and the wonderful universe of books!

“I think it’s the books that you read when you’re young that live with you forever.”—J.K. Rowling

Every spring at King’s Oak we celebrate UNESCO World Book Day with an entire day of reading favourite stories and authors in our classes, parading in a brilliant costume parade and handing out prizes. It is a day most awaited for after a whole month of an exciting Spring Reading Challenge!
All ages are invited to join in our traditional Spring Reading Challenge – from Pink Class (1.5 years old) to the end of Primary, while Secondary participate in their own challenge. This year we had 62 participants during 5 weeks, who read 742 books!
Parents have supported this by sending videos of their children reading, or photos of bookfaces or fun places to read it. The books were in English, Romanian, Spanish and Hebrew, while the reviews were recorded, drawn or written.
Here are a few examples of these! A lot of hard work and creativity!
The purpose of our yearly reading challenge is not only to enhance our children’s love of reading, but also show them how much they can do if they set their mind to it.
Besides decoding the texts, the challenge asks for book reviews, which helps children think of different points of view, take into account different tastes and ages, and think of what makes an interesting book.
Not only do the children get to recommend books to each other, but they also inspire each other to read more – all in a very healthy and fair competition!
Books are a uniquely portable magic.” – Stephen King We are very proud of our school community for enjoying and organising such a successful event again this year. “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” – Albert Einstein.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
