The British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS Abu Dhabi) has redefined the start of the school year with a series of engaging and innovative welcome events designed to bring families together as well as introduce them to the vibrant city of Abu Dhabi. A standout event in this year’s orientation programme was “The BIS Abu Dhabi Amazing Race,” a fun-filled, citywide adventure aimed at helping new families connect and explore their new surroundings.
Held on 24th August, the race took families on a journey to some of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic landmarks, including the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Emirates Palace, and The Louvre. Participants followed creative clues and captured selfies at each location, with a luxurious overnight stay on Yas Island up for grabs for the family with the most creative photo.
One participant shared their excitement: “This was a fantastic way to explore Abu Dhabi! We had a great time navigating the city, and it was even better that we could team up with another family since we hadn’t yet bought a car. Our sons became fast friends—it was such a special experience.”
Principal Alan Cocker spoke about the event’s significance: “At The British International School Abu Dhabi, we aim to make the start of the school year an exciting, welcoming experience for all families. The Amazing Race wasn’t just a fun activity—it was a way to help families bond, discover the city, and feel at home from day one. We’re thrilled with the positive feedback and look forward to continuing this spirit of community throughout the year.”
Beyond The Amazing Race, BIS Abu Dhabi’s orientation programme featured a range of thoughtful initiatives. New families were introduced to teachers through Transition Days, which included tutor profiles and videos sent out before the start of term to foster early connections. A buddy system, settling-in calls, and strong pastoral care from form tutors further ensured that students felt supported and welcomed.
The week of activities culminated in a group picnic at the Sports Hall, where over 140 families gathered to relax, socialise, and enjoy a meal together. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the school’s efforts to create meaningful connections and help them feel part of the BIS Abu Dhabi community.
With this unique approach to family orientation, The British International School Abu Dhabi has set a new standard for starting the school year, laying a strong foundation for a year full of growth, learning, and lasting friendships.
