Meet Zane, a 2018 graduate of The British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS Abu Dhabi), who has not only embraced academic excellence but has also thrived in a rapidly evolving career field. After completing his GCSEs and the IB Diploma with us, Zane went on to pursue a double major in Economics and Mathematics in Texas, USA. Today, he is making strides in artificial intelligence as an AI Engineer with General Motors.
Returning recently to BIS Abu Dhabi for a visit, Zane was struck by how much the school has grown and evolved. “The transformation, the growth I’ve noticed—it’s unparalleled,” he shared, reflecting on the thriving, diverse community he remembers fondly. The global perspective he developed at BIS Abu Dhabi has been a key asset in his journey, helping him adapt to new environments and connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
“The school was so cosmopolitan,” Zane said. “Looking back, it really reinforced the cross-cultural communication skills I needed when I moved to the United States.” This foundation in global citizenship not only helped Zane navigate life abroad but also empowered him to take on leadership roles and think big.
At BIS Abu Dhabi, Zane absorbed more than just academics. “The IB Diploma was incredibly helpful. Not only did it give me college placement credits that allowed me to finish my degree in three years instead of four, but it also made me flexible and adaptable,” he explained. The IB programme’s breadth of subjects helped Zane explore multiple fields and discover a passion for both economics and mathematics. He recalled a pivotal school trip to the UN General Assembly in New York, where he met ambassadors from around the world—a powerful experience that inspired him to pursue ambitious goals and consider the global impact of his work.
After graduating, Zane joined General Motors as part of a pioneering AI team, contributing to the rapidly advancing field of automotive technology. “I’m part of a team focused on data analytics for infotainment systems, improving the software within cars as they evolve into more technology-driven spaces.” His role at General Motors also involves continuous learning, as he prepares to pursue a part-time master’s degree to keep pace with the changing landscape of AI and software engineering.
Zane credits his time at BIS Abu Dhabi with fostering a spirit of curiosity and adaptability that has been instrumental in his career path. “You don’t have to have everything figured out,” he advises current students. “Take it one step at a time. I started on a finance track but ended up in AI engineering. The flexibility and adaptability you develop will serve you well in today’s global economy.”
Zane’s story is a testament to the impact of BIS Abu Dhabi’s commitment to nurturing ambition, curiosity, and resilience. We’re immensely proud of Zane and can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next.
