Empowering Teenage Girls: A Workshop on Urban Environment

As part of the International Women’s Day initiative, under the theme For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment., students at Copenhagen International School (CIS) were invited to participate in a workshop hosted by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the charity Make Space for Girls, and the architectural firm Henning Larsen, with funding from the British Embassy in Copenhagen. This exciting opportunity aimed to gather the perspectives and ideas of teenage girls on how they experience the urban environment.

The workshop took place one day before International Women’s Day at CIS and provided students with a platform to share their insights on urban spaces. Their input will be invaluable in shaping discussions about inclusive city planning and design.

As such, their ideas and work completed during the workshop served as essential evidence and discussion material for a panel session that same evening. This panel was attended by key stakeholders, including architects, town planners, and local councillors, who were keen to understand how urban spaces can better cater to teenage girls. All workshop participants and their parents were invited to attend the evening panel session.

This workshop was one of the many opportunities CIS students get to contribute to real-world urban planning discussions. By sharing their perspectives, they are helping to create more inclusive and accessible public spaces. We look forward to witnessing their ideas shape the future of urban design and ensuring that teenage voices are heard in meaningful ways.
