Copenhagen International School Students Embark on Unforgettable Trip to Madagascar with Operation Wallacea

A group of Secondary School students and two of their teachers from Copenhagen International School (CIS) recently embarked on a transformative journey to Madagascar to support the conservation efforts of Operation Wallacea.

The trip offered the students a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of the island nation of Madagascar. “For many of us this is definitely shaping out to be a memorable experience we will not forget,” shared one student. Students started their incredible journey in a hostel that offered them a sight of rice paddies, mud huts, as well as skyscrapers, a blend that reflected the diverse landscape of Madagascar. They were introduced to the Malagasy culture, including the fascinating ritual of ‘Bone Wrapping,’ where ancestors’ bones are re-dug and rewrapped to honor the dead and introduce new family members to the deceased.

During their visit, the CIS students were involved in many once in a lifetime experiences. They observed five different species of lemurs and witnessed an intriguing territorial dispute between lemur species, a vivid lesson on the animals’ interactions with their environment. They went on a three-hour hike to Matsedroy, a satellite camp situated near a crocodile-inhabited lake. The students’ ecological understanding was broadened by lake bird surveys, spotting vibrant King Fishers and herds of Zebu, butterfly counts and forest plot studies, where they learned about carbon sequestration’s crucial role in conservation. Students counted trees in designated plots to analyse changes in the local flora. This immersive experience not only deepened the students’ appreciation for Madagascar’s unique ecosystems but also highlighted the importance of global conservation efforts, ensuring this educational trip would leave a lasting impact on their lives.

Copenhagen International School (CIS), located in Denmark, is setting a new standard for sustainable education with its cutting-edge campus and innovative environmental initiatives. Beyond its impressive infrastructure, CIS has implemented a comprehensive sustainability curriculum that spans all grade levels. The curriculum is designed to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to address global environmental challenges. From the primary years through to the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, students engage in hands-on projects that promote environmental stewardship. These projects include urban gardening, waste reduction initiatives, and collaborations with local and international environmental organizations. By embedding sustainability into its educational ethos, CIS ensures that students graduate with a deep understanding of and commitment to sustainable living.
