Why families choose a Canadian school in North America?

Choosing the right school for their children is a pivotal decision for any parent, and Canadian schools in North America have emerged as a top choice for many families. The reasons for this preference are multi-faceted, reflecting Canada’s commitment to high educational standards, a safe and inclusive environment, and a focus on holistic development.

Excellence in Education

At the heart of the decision for many parents is the quality of educational offerings. Canadian schools are renowned for their rigorous academic standards and a curriculum that is both comprehensive and adaptive to the changing demands of the global economy. Students are encouraged to think critically, innovate, and apply their knowledge in practical settings, making them well-prepared for university and beyond. Moreover, Canadian qualifications are highly respected worldwide, providing students with a competitive edge in the global job market.

Inclusive and Diverse Environment

Canada’s cultural diversity is mirrored in its educational institutions, making them an ideal setting for students from various backgrounds to learn and grow. This diversity promotes an environment of mutual respect and understanding, helping students to develop important social skills and empathy. Schools in Canada prioritize creating a welcoming atmosphere where all students feel valued and included, which is particularly appealing to parents seeking a nurturing environment for their children.

Focus on Safety and Well-being

Safety is a primary concern for parents everywhere. Canadian schools are known for their safe campuses, where strict policies are in place to protect students. The low crime rates in Canada, coupled with the emphasis on student safety and mental health, assure parents that their children are in a secure and supportive environment. Additionally, Canadian schools offer robust support systems including counseling services, peer mentoring, and wellness programs to promote mental and physical health.

Rich Extracurricular Programs

The emphasis on holistic development is another compelling reason why families opt for Canadian education. Schools offer a wide array of extracurricular activities that cater to a variety of interests, from sports and music to science clubs and arts. These programs are essential for character building, providing students with opportunities to explore their interests, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and enhance their self-esteem.

English and French Language Proficiency

As a bilingual country, Canada offers unique opportunities for students to become proficient in both English and French, the two official languages. This bilingual education opens many doors for students in international business, diplomatic services, and global communication, setting them up for a multitude of career opportunities worldwide.

In conclusion, Canadian schools in North America attract families due to their strong academic credentials, safe and inclusive environment, and a well-rounded approach to student development. These factors not only prepare students for future academic and career success but also ensure they grow up in a supportive and enriching environment.

Parent and Student Reviews

  • My kids are currently in their 11th year at this school and in high school we are truly seeing the benefits of a full language immersive IB education. Both fluent in Spanish (at 14 and 16) my children are doing college level analysis and writing on a daily basis. They are taught not only how to plan and research a topic, but how to relate it to their lives and to the greater community, and then how to carefully review and integrate feedback- all leading to college preparation that gives the kids such confidence as they begin their college search. Also, every graduate I’ve ever met has the ability to engage and connect with teachers and other adults with a maturity beyond their years. All with an approach that encourages the kids to be self reliant and resilient- key factors in success that are harder and harder to find. What felt like a risk early on (throwing my kids into a full langauge immersion) has paid off in spades. Last- we are an incredibly tolerant and safe space for a diverse group of students and families!

  • This school has an environment that feels like a home with excellent professionals who are top in their fields.  The education and values imparted to the children stand out far beyond what is offered by other institutions. I have had the privilege to experience The Wingate School first hand for the past 8 years from working here and having a child in attendance. I have seen them grow and transform over time as an institution as well as the students from little ones into thoughtful, intelligent teenage leaders that inspire, and empower their peers. With the integral character program these children are maturing not only their intelligence but also their capacity for empathy, responsibility, integrity and confidence. Developing both sides of the coin if you will, character and intelect, to work hand in hand to develop our future leaders.

  • Having worked at this school, I can speak from direct experience, and can say the place really does care about its staff, students and parents. All emails and requests are listened to, and are not just met with a blanket email. The school has been tailored perfectly to fit with its incredible surroundings, and this without doubt also improves everybody’s mood upon entering. The school has gone from strength to strength despite having to deal with the pandemic not long after it opened. I am proud to say I worked there for 4 happy years.

  • My family (three children) has been part of this magnificent school for eight years. In addition to the excellent academic level, they are very happy, they learn, they have fun, and their group of friends is trustworthy and close-knit. The School of Character program has provided us with guidance as a family many times. I highly recommend it.

  • We visited this school for an open house event in the winter. We cannot say enough good things about the faculty. They were a group of incredibly experienced people from around the world, and also very welcoming. You don’t always see that from top talent. With its location next to New York City, the IB, waterfront, and huge campus, this is going to be one of the best schools in the world.

  • We have been parents here at Fairfax Christian for the past three years. We now have a child in each level of the school, lower, middle and high school. The school kept our children safe and in school during the tumultuous time of the pandemic and we will be forever grateful. We have been blessed with teachers who are attentive and care about the character and education of our children. The challenging curriculum, diverse student population and a Christian education will keep our family at Fairfax Christian.
