Overview
Trinity College School is a co-educational, independent boarding/day school located on 100 acres of rolling countryside in picturesque Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, one hour’s drive east of Toronto. Our Senior School, Grades 9-12, includes 470 students, approximately 60% of whom are boarders. Our Junior School includes nearly 100 day students from Grade 5 to Grade 8. Established in 1865, TCS is one of Canada’s oldest and most respected educational institutions. The School places a balanced emphasis on academics, service learning, athletics and the arts as both a long-held TCS tradition and a rethought, reinvigorated approach to 21st century education. Our supportive and close-knit community of students, parents, alumni, staff and friends make the School on the Hill a truly special place. Trinity College School’s challenging academic programme over four years of high school emphasizes a liberal arts philosophy. Students are engaged equally in the arts and sciences during their first two years of study. In Grade 11 and 12, students begin to specialize and many take Advanced Placement courses. Class sizes at TCS are small, ranging from 12 to 20 students. This ensures that each student receives personal attention and the opportunity to develop positive relationships with their teachers. TCS emphasizes learning through the use of information technology, with in-room access to the Internet, e-mail, SmartBoards and fully networked classrooms. Students and teachers use laptops for Web research, classroom assignments and presentations and also benefit from a online learning system which allows communication and access to course information after school hours. TCS prides itself on four great strengths in our academic programme: our course of study or curriculum, our facilities, our schedule and our faculty. The main school buildings feature classrooms, science laboratories, computer facilities, two gymnasiums, a dining hall, student centre and six boarding residences, including three for boys and three for girls. TCS is committed a learning environment that extends beyond the classroom. In particular, our residential and co-curricular programmes provide a chance to truly teach the skills of choosing well in life. In recent years, the arts programme has excited welcomed an impressive dramatic theatre and a stunning visual arts wing to complement the world class instruction being delivered daily within the curriculum and co-curricular opportunities at TCS. International students at TCS benefit from the school’s conscientious faculty members. Boarders are greeted by student advisers upon arrival and each student can expect to have a faculty advisor usually affiliated with the same house. Housemasters, assistant housemasters and their families live in the boarding houses and are therefore able to provide a high level of supervision and support. English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are available for students to develop and improve their conversational and writing skills. ESL courses stress vocabulary building, pronunciation, mastery of grammar and proficiency, and confidence in reading comprehension. ESL also utilizes critical thinking and concept learning to facilitate students’ integration into the TCS classroom. With academics at the forefront, TCS allows its students to excel in many areas of life. Students are encouraged to experiment as they travel the road of adolescence. The abundance of activities creates an exciting momentum at the TCS for all those involved. At the end of the day however, it is the caring and genuine community that makes Trinity College School a home to over 265 boarding students from around the world.
