Academics
We enjoy the largest VCE, VCE VET, and IB subject choice of any girls’ school in Victoria. MLC is an exciting and rewarding place for our students to learn and prepare for the future.
In Years 11 and 12, students reach the fulfilment of their Secondary Schooling. At MLC, every passion and interest catered for across our extensive subject offerings and pathways.
Senior School students may graduate with an academically focused Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), an industry-specific skill set through Vocational Education and Training (VCE VET), or an interdisciplinary International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) that develops their sense of global citizenship.
VCE Subjects
Our diverse VCE program is tailored to meet the needs and interests of each student, with a wide range of subject choices available. Students may undertake just VCE subjects, study VCE subjects in combination with VCE VET subjects, include a single IB subject in their Year 11 VCE program, or study VCE with a language through the Victorian School of Languages Distance Education. VCE is recognised by Australian tertiary institutions and major universities.
IB Subjects
The IB program prepares students to be active participants in their global community and has a reputation for focusing on holistic education, critical thinking and global perspectives. A key point of difference is curriculum structure. VCE students choose from a variety of subjects whereas IB students’ study from 6 core areas. It is particularly suited to students wanting to pursue tertiary studies and qualifications and is recognised by Australian tertiary institutions and major universities .
Extra curricular
MLC’s range of co-curricular activities is one of the largest and most varied of any school in Australia, ensuring we are the girls’ school of choice for learning that goes beyond the classroom.
Our priority is getting to know our students and understanding their unique abilities. We customise our holistic educational approach with a wide range of co-curricular activities, offering extra breadth and depth to their experience and education at the College. We encourage them to try something they have not done before to ignite their curiosity and passion. Co-curricular activities help to build skills and confidence in ways other than in academic success. It allows for creative outlets, opportunities to have fun with their peers and the chance to participate with girls from other year levels. We support them in discovering and pursuing their purpose and what is it they want to achieve.
With so many options, there is something for everyone at MLC. Discover the diverse and dynamic range of programs from sport and music to debating, cooking and arts for students to get involved in.
Boarding
Our Boarding House upholds a strong sense of community spirit, making it a warm and friendly place to call home. We provide the perfect balance between flexibility and structure, privacy and connection, resulting in the best boarding experience for students in Melbourne.
Life at Tiddeman House is never boring; MLC Boarders have an array of organised weekend activities to choose from, an annual Boarders’ drama production and special event nights such as our annual Boarders’ Birthday Night (a Boarding tradition dating back to 1889!)
Other activities include city excursions, visits to everything from the Zoo to escape rooms, and even a surf weekend in Geelong, a beach visit to Philip Island or a trip to the snow! Our supervised activities offer great camaraderie between all students and build lasting friendships.
Importantly, all students boarding at MLC are placed into a ‘Tiddeman Family’, with their own dedicated student leader. They dine together every Sunday night during a Family Dinner, which fosters a strong sense of belonging.
Weekly options for more flexibility
Weekly Boarding allows students to access the best of Melbourne school opportunities, balanced with their family lifestyle.
Running from Sunday night to Friday afternoon, students boarding weekly at MLC get the best of both worlds, with support during the week to manage homework, study, assessment, and co-curricular activities while spending every weekend and the holidays at home with their family.
Weekly Boarding can benefit many: busy families dealing with co-curricular activities and clashing schedules, those who live on Melbourne’s fringe wanting to avoid daily commutes, or where families are an easy V-Line train trip away from the city.
For those already attending MLC, short stay options are available for two weeks up to one term. This is a flexible option for parents/guardians who may need to take an extended trip away, and ensures their daughter benefits from the community, routine and security of the boarding house during this time.
