Racial and Social Justice Union – Real World Practice of Global Citizenship Education

The Racial and Social Justice Union (RSJU) at Copenhagen International School (CIS) is a shining example of the school’s commitment to enhancing student agency and creating an environment where all diverse individuals can be themselves and thrive.

Founded in 2021 by Secondary School students in response to the global outcry following George Floyd’s murder, the RSJU is a student-founded and student-run extracurricular club dedicated to addressing racial and social issues within the school community and beyond.

Meeting weekly, the club fosters active, inclusive, and respectful discussions among upper secondary students on relevant and pressing topics. Over the years, the RSJU has led several impactful initiatives, including raising awareness during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, advocating for a more inclusive and diverse syllabus, and engaging younger students and teachers through presentations and professional development days.

The RSJU’s mission statement, “Empower allies to take action for racial & social justice and establish a safe forum for the CIS community to take initiative,” reflects the school’s broader goal of nurturing student belonging and agency. By taking ownership of this critical work, the students involved in RSJU are not only advocating for change but also embodying the values of justice and social responsibility that CIS strives to instil in its students.
