Overview

We are proud to be the first Finnish International K-12 School in Qatar. The Finnish education concept is internationally acclaimed for its impressive track record in producing high-ranking student performance, while nurturing well-being for the whole learning community.

The aim of Qatar-Finland International School is to create an atmosphere where students can experience a continuous positive learning environment. The school recognises each individual learner and the diversity of learners, then supports the learning process of each student.
Learning environment is an important factor when it comes to planning and selecting working methods. Our approach aims at broadening the students’ learning spaces from the classroom to other spaces inside the school and in the school outdoor environment, which enables students to acquire, use and produce knowledge, and enhances participation and collaborative learning.

Finnish education emphasises cross-curricular themes and learning. Students do not study only subjects, but rather themes and phenomena. Versatile working methods give the students a joy of learning and experiences of success, while supporting creative activities characteristic of different age groups. The function of these working approaches is to develop social, learning, thinking, working, and problem-solving skills, and to foster active participation.
Students take responsibility for their own learning process, while the teacher’s role as a facilitator is important. Through trust in students, we can give more space and support the attainment of everyone’s personal learning goals. Motivation is also strengthened by working methods that support self‐regulation and the feeling of being part of a group.

The Finnish system strongly believes in collaboration with the students’ families. There are several studies showing that the students coming from homes that work together with the school and show interest for education, perform much better socially and academically than their peers without this support. At the same time, the Finnish Education System wants to emphasize the fundamental responsibility for learning, which is always on the student. When cultivating independent learners this responsibility must be taken seriously and nurtured from an early age.

Academics

At the heart of Qatar-Finland International School’s curriculum is the Finnish National Core Curriculum. This is combined with the curriculum standards of the state of Qatar. The school curriculum is approved and accredited by both the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in the state of Qatar and the Finnish National Agency for Education in Finland. The Finnish national curriculum, which is a foundation for one of the leading educational systems in the world, is designed to provide a balance of high academic skills combined with strong hand- and self-expression skills through music, arts, crafts and Physical Education. The curriculum is implemented through age-appropriate activities and methodology. Teaching and learning in Q.F.I. School is based on separate curriculums for Pre-primary (Grade 0), Basic Education (Grades 1-9), and High School (Grades 10-12) with specific characteristics.

Extra-curricular

Extra-curricular activities are organized to support the school’s educational and teaching work in accordance with the objectives of basic education. The activities are to support the student’s ethical and social growth and diversified self-development. The purpose of the activities is to encourage the kindling of pastimes, and to provide the students an opportunity for guided educational and recreational activities in a familiar, peaceful, and safe environment. Extra-curriculars must offer diverse activities that respect children and young people. They must also provide opportunities for positive interaction with adults and other children. Activities have an additional fee, and the participation is voluntary for the students. Approximately 75% of our students have been involved in ECAs. Qatar-Finland International School offers the possibility for students in Grades 0-2 to have an additional activity lesson daily from 1.15pm-2pm. The afternoon clubs are teacher-led, structured activities designed in accordance with students’ preferences. They are available after each school day unless otherwise informed. The afternoon clubs are meant only for the students with older siblings in Grades 3-12, or for students waiting for their school bus which leaves at 2.00 pm. Afternoon clubs have an additional fee.
