Why families choose a British school in North America?
Choosing a school for one’s child is undoubtedly one of the most significant decisions a parent will make, and for many, British schools in North America present a compelling choice. But what drives families to opt for these institutions far from their original UK base? The reasons are as varied as they are persuasive.
Academic Excellence and Rigorous Standards
British schools are renowned globally for their rigorous academic standards and a strong emphasis on preparing students for university and beyond. These institutions often follow the British curriculum, including IGCSEs and A-Levels, which are highly respected by universities around the world. This adherence to a globally recognized curriculum ensures that students are well-prepared for academic pursuits in any corner of the globe, making these schools particularly appealing to families who value educational continuity and excellence.
Unique Cultural Environment
Enrolling a child in a British school in North America also offers a unique opportunity to immerse them in a multicultural environment that blends the educational traditions of the UK with the diverse cultural backdrop of North America. This fusion creates an enriching atmosphere that fosters broad-mindedness and adaptability among students. Parents often choose these schools because they want their children to gain a global perspective while appreciating their own and other cultures.
Emphasis on Character Development
Beyond academics, British schools place a significant emphasis on character education, aiming to develop pupils who are not only intellectually fulfilled but also morally robust. This holistic approach to education is highly attractive to parents looking for an educational setting that supports their child’s all-round development. Schools promote values such as integrity, respect, and responsibility, preparing students to be principled leaders in their future endeavors.
Extracurricular Opportunities
The breadth and quality of extracurricular activities offered by British schools in North America are another major draw. From sports to arts and a variety of clubs and societies, these schools provide students with ample opportunities to explore and develop diverse interests and talents. Such activities are integral to student life, helping to build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.
Moreover, parents appreciate the typically smaller class sizes found in British schools, which allow for more personalized attention and tailor-made educational experiences. Teachers in these settings are often highly qualified and passionate about their subjects, further enhancing the learning experience with their expertise and enthusiasm.
In conclusion, the decision to choose a British school in North America is driven by a blend of high academic standards, a unique cultural synthesis, an emphasis on personal growth, and a plethora of extracurricular activities. Parent and Student Reviews
- April, 2025This school has an environment that feels like a home with excellent professionals who are top in their fields. The education and values imparted to the children stand out far beyond what is offered by other institutions. I have had the privilege to experience The Wingate School first hand for the past 8 years from working here and having a child in attendance. I have seen them grow and transform over time as an institution as well as the students from little ones into thoughtful, intelligent teenage leaders that inspire, and empower their peers. With the integral character program these children are maturing not only their intelligence but also their capacity for empathy, responsibility, integrity and confidence. Developing both sides of the coin if you will, character and intelect, to work hand in hand to develop our future leaders.Show more
- April, 2025Having worked at this school, I can speak from direct experience, and can say the place really does care about its staff, students and parents. All emails and requests are listened to, and are not just met with a blanket email. The school has been tailored perfectly to fit with its incredible surroundings, and this without doubt also improves everybody’s mood upon entering. The school has gone from strength to strength despite having to deal with the pandemic not long after it opened. I am proud to say I worked there for 4 happy years.Show more
- My family (three children) has been part of this magnificent school for eight years. In addition to the excellent academic level, they are very happy, they learn, they have fun, and their group of friends is trustworthy and close-knit. The School of Character program has provided us with guidance as a family many times. I highly recommend it.Show more
