Academics
Based on Quebec Ministry of Education guidelines, the Stanstead College curriculum is broadly divided into junior (Grade 7, 8) and senior levels (Grade 9, 10, 11), with the core subjects of Mathematics, English and French emphasized at each level. Grade 11 is highlighted by advanced level courses in Mathematics, French, Chemistry and Physics. Students may opt for French as a second language or Français as a first language (langue maternelle).
Students graduate from high school upon the successful completion of their Grade 11 (Secondary V) year. Students may choose to attend Quebec CEGEP (two-year college subsidized by the Quebec government) or enroll in Grade 12, which provides students with an intensive university preparatory program, including extensive Advanced Placement options.
Student:teacher ratio is 7:1, with an average class size of 11 in the junior school, 15 in the senior school.
Stanstead College was the first (and still one of only a few) Canadian school accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, providing our students with access to top schools throughout North America.
Extra curricular
Student life is everything that happens outside the classroom and off the playing field. It’s boarding with a roommate from another country. It’s gaining leadership skills as a prefect. It’s singing at Café Cappuccino or acting in a play. It’s taking part in weekend activities. It’s the support of our wellness team. It’s Winter Carnival, class trips, club afternoons and simply having an amazing time hanging out with friends. In other words, student life is never dull.
Highlights include:
– Faculty advisors
– Fully equipped dining hall with family-style meals
– Weekly clubs and weekend activities
– Prefect system and other leadership opportunities
– Student centre
– Wellness Centre with two live-in nurses and school counsellor, visiting doctor
– Carnivals, special events, music and drama
Athletics are an integral part of the school program in all three terms, resulting in well-coached, fit and competitive student-athletes. But being a Spartan is not solely about winning. It’s about learning teamwork, respect and discipline while representing your school with pride and spirit. Go Spartans!
With a record of success spanning decades, Stanstead College’s hockey program is recognized as one of North America’s finest. Student-athletes train and develop in state-of-the-art facilities, and the schedule of competition for both the girls and boys provides maximum exposure to scouts and recruiters at the university, junior and professional levels. The training is player-focused with emphasis on developing the whole student-athlete and promotion to higher ranks.
Boarding
Stanstead College has five residences – Bugbee for junior boys, Wolfe for junior girls, Davis for senior boys, Webster for senior girls and Cowen House, our Grade 12 co-ed residence. Each offers a safe, nurturing environment for students from around the world to live and work together. Each residence is overseen by live-in house directors and their families, teachers-on-duty and student prefects who make sure the environment is one of respect and cooperation.
