Following our recent announcement that Turkish will be introduced as an academic mother-tongue pathway at ISR, we are pleased to share another exciting development within our IB language programme.
From the 2027–28 academic year, students entering the IB Diploma Programme at ISR will have the opportunity to study Chinese B at both Standard Level and Higher Level.
ISR already offers Chinese A: Language and Literature for students whose language proficiency and educational background prepare them for first-language study. The introduction of Chinese B creates an additional pathway, particularly for native Chinese speakers whose language profile does not make Chinese A the most appropriate option.
Placement in Chinese A or Chinese B will be based on each student’s language proficiency, educational background and the joint recommendation of the Chinese teacher and IB Coordinator.
The addition of Chinese B further strengthens ISR’s broad IB language programme. Students can study Language A in English, German, Japanese, Chinese or Turkish. Language B is offered in English, German, French, Spanish and, from the 2027–28 academic year, Chinese. Students may also begin French or Spanish at ab initio level.
Chinese is also offered at ISR from Grade 6 as a third language for native Chinese-speaking students. The new Chinese B option therefore provides greater flexibility for these students as they progress into the IB Diploma Programme and allows them to continue developing their Chinese at a level suited to their individual language profile.
By expanding the range of pathways available in Chinese, ISR can better support students in developing their academic language skills while recognising the different linguistic backgrounds and levels of proficiency within our international community.
