As a leading international school in Abu Dhabi, The British International School (BIS) Abu Dhabi is at the forefront of innovative educational research. As one of 27 Nord Anglia pilot schools participating in a global study with Boston College, BIS Abu Dhabi is actively integrating metacognition into teaching to enhance student learning and critical thinking.
Understanding Metacognition
Metacognition – the process of understanding how to learn best to adapt and thrive in different situations – is a key factor in academic success. By teaching students to think about how they learn, BIS Abu Dhabi is fostering independent, adaptable, and self-motivated learners prepared for the future.
Key Findings from the Research
The first report from Nord Anglia Education’s two-year Metacognition Research Project, conducted in partnership with Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Project Zero at Harvard, highlights the impact of metacognitive strategies in schools. Results show:
- 84% of students reported a better understanding of their own learning processes.
- 75% noted increased independence in their studies.
- 71% found that Project Zero Thinking Routines deepened their critical thinking skills.
- Over two-thirds observed improvements in creativity, collaboration, and social skills.
Impact at BIS Abu Dhabi
BIS Abu Dhabi has embedded metacognitive practices throughout its curriculum. Secondary Assistant Headteacher Victoria Juett highlighted the benefits, stating, “Metacognition has created a more reflective, self-directed learning environment where students take ownership of their education, improving not just academic outcomes but also their overall well-being.”
In the classroom, teachers are implementing Harvard’s Project Zero Thinking Routines and aligning them with the school’s core learner ambitions – creativity, curiosity, compassion, collaboration, commitment, and critical thinking. Year 5 teacher Aaron Regan emphasised how these strategies have been integrated into guided reading sessions, particularly in developing prediction and inference skills. Early results suggest improved literacy outcomes and greater student engagement.
Global Educational Insights
Nord Anglia’s Group Head of Education Research, Dr. Kate Erricker, praised the study’s findings, stating, “Metacognitive practices are transforming how students approach learning. This research confirms that when students understand their thinking, they become more independent and effective learners.” Boston College researcher Dr. Damian Bebell also highlighted the global significance of the study, calling it “one of the first large-scale investigations into metacognition and skills development.”
A Commitment to Excellence
BIS Abu Dhabi’s involvement in this pioneering research reflects its dedication to world-class education. Principal Alan Cocker noted, “As educators, we must always refine how we teach. Partnering in this research allows us to enhance our students’ learning experience, ensuring they develop the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.”
