- NSA is an outstanding opportunity for growth, learning and adventure. The location in Costa Rica makes this more of a study abroad type experience with a degree of cultural & language immersion. For the rest of his life, when our son speaks about his high school experience, he’ll have a measure of pride. Costa Rica is a desirable place to visit and the fact that he’s spent close to a year of his life there is unique and special.Aventuras and the experiential educational components allow the boys to absorb content with all of their senses, create memories that last a lifetime and incorporate much more learning that would ever happen in a classroom. They gain social, emotional skills and what’s more, their therapists come alongside to offer perspective in the midst of a situation, which is much more realistic support for a teenage boy. As things get real, it allows the team insight that could have taken years to unfold otherwise. This collaborative approach is unique, profound and immensely helpful in moving boys towards greater self-awareness.The education at NSA is top notch. Students are challenged to the extent of their ability, but the integrated environment allows them room to grow in areas where they need support, such as with Executive Function skills. My son benefited from a team approach and the scaffolding it provided for him. We appreciated that he was offered Honors level work, which we all knew was within his ability, but that he could still feel successful when the stretch proved to be more than he could juggle at times.The social milieu was one of the things that our son expressed frustration about initially, but as he departed, he said he’ll miss the community most. Living in community is hard, but it sure promotes growth and self-awareness!We are deeply thankful for the time our son spent at NSA and have no regrets about our decision to make this investment. He will benefit from the tools, resources and learning experiences he gained there for the rest of his life.

And the opportunity for our son (and the whole family) to experience another country was an added bonus. The staff is incredibly attentive, friendly and responsive to all parent inquiries. I would definitely recommend NSA to anyone seeking a TBS.
- July, 2025My son was in a very dark place with tremendous anxiety, depression, and contemplation of suicide. He went on a wilderness therapeutic odyssey in the cold altitudes of Utah and had an amazing turnaround.We hoped we would get him right back home after that, but he was recommended a therapeutic boarding school and we settled on NSA. The tightness of the grip on him was loosened, compared to his wilderness experience. However, he was still surrounded by a lot of supportive adults practiced in teen emotional therapy and also teachers and also friends. While his experience was not easy for him, it put him on a path to recovery. He was able to catch up on his schoolwork and not miss a year scholastically despite all of his experiences. Today, while still working on a number of emotional processes, he is a different, happier, and more self-possessed person. Thank you NSA!
- My son attended NSA in 2019 and it was a life-changing experience for him and our family. The city we lived in was creating an environment where there were too many enablers and escapes which continuously supported destructive behavior. The allure of being able to address our issues locally within a few months was prominent at the outset, but overcoming that mirage involved knowing that my son needed so much more. Being able to send him to a safe place out of the country not only offered a therapeutic environment but also a new and amazing culture. His time in Costa Rica taught him a lot about discipline, self-regulation, impulse control, and overall mental and physical health. He was able to learn what it took to be healthy, happy and independent, which in turn helped him to be more responsible and mature. NSA also encouraged family counseling which made a massive difference in my son’s process. We were able to talk about past issues and figure out how to work through them in the future. Now, in 2025 my son has graduated college and started a career. He has lived on his own since his freshman year and secured his own jobs for 3+ years. He gives back to his community and takes care of his best friend (dog) Bear. We are grateful for what this program taught our family/friends and we hope that it can have an amazing impact on yours. We are also so glad we did not make the mistake of thinking that our problems would all be solved in a few month from the comfort of our home and city. NSA is special place where miracles do happen.
