The forty three IB alumni are truly to be commended having completed their studies over two very challenging academic years starting in August 2020. Despite studying online for the whole of Term 1 in their final year, they overcame these challenges and can now proudly hold their IB Diplomas in hand. The world is truly now their oyster!
The School’s IB results continue to be outstanding, building on the excellent 10 years of IB Diploma provision at JIS. Australian student Tiana Moore achieved the highest score of 44 points. Benjamin Hinoul, from Belgium, Deputy Captain for Ibis Boys Boarding House achieved 43 points and is holding an offer to study at Homerton College at the University of Cambridge. Twelve students achieved 40 points or above. The world average IB Diploma point score was 31.98. The JIS average point score was 35.4. 53% achieved 36 points or above. This is important because to enter the prestigious Russell Group Universities in the UK, 36 points is typically the minimum required.
Isyam Sazali from Brunei and Filippa Baur from Germany both achieved a stunning 42 points. Isyam was the Eco Captain for Argus Boys House and Filippa was the Sandpiper House Deputy Captain.
Qawiem Jais, a scholarship student from the Ministry of Education achieved 41 points. This could allow him to enter the cream of the world’s Universities. Alongside his studies, Qawiem held a leadership role in Eagle Boarding House Council as the Eco-Captain, inspiring the boys in Eagle to always consider the impact of actions upon the environment. Also achieving 41 points were Muhammad Qaiser from Canada (Hawk House Deputy House Captain) and Bruneian, Jun Heng Tan (Monarch House Deputy House Captain).
Four students achieved 40 points – Canadian students Anusha Bhushan (Deputy Captain for Osprey Girls Boarding House) and Athena Chalmers (Blackeye House Captain), together with Jillian Fernandes from India (Eco Captain for Osprey Girls Boarding House) and Alisha Shahromey from Singapore.
A further 12 students achieved 35 points or above. They are Chloe Hill (39 points, from Australia, JIS Sports Captain and also Sports Captain for Whistler House), Kiwi Li (39 points, from Hong Kong, Creative and Digital Captain for Osprey Girls Boarding House), Australian twins Chi Phan (39 points, Fireback House Captain) and Le Phan (37 points, Social Director for Fireback House), James Bannister (38 points, return to the UK to study at the University of Manchester; Senior School Council and Hawk House Leadership Team), Preksha Shubham from India – 38 points (Whistler House Captain) and Bruneian Aisyah Musib (37 points, Senior School Council and Heron House Captain). Fellow Bruneians Aliah Adzlan (Deputy Sports Captain for Whistler House) and Wafiy Faizal Ezam (Media Captain for Argus House), Australian Nick Bourbon (Senior House Council – Polio Points and Deputy Argus House Captain) and Clara Grafe from Germany all achieved 36 points and Nadhrah Melhan, from Singapore, the Skylark House Captain, achieved 35 points.
Whilst these top performing students will leave JIS with superb academic results, they will be remembered more by their fellow students for the significant impact as young leaders in the school and the influence they have had on those around them, especially during lockdown. They have set an excellent example to the younger members of our community. These success stories would not have been written without their parents support and also that of the academic team in the Upper Years – Mr Tony Piper (Head of Senior School and JIS Vice Principal), Dr Daniel Milner (Director of Studies) and Mr Alex Cook, Head of Sixth Form and Higher Education Coordinator who, together with the teaching and pastoral staff continue to challenge and inspire students to become the best that they can be. The International Baccalaureate is offered at JIS as one of the pre-university options for 16-18 year olds and is the world’s fastest growing international qualification. To complete this challenging qualification, students study six subjects – three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level including English, Maths, a Language, a Humanities subject, a Science subject plus a final creative or elective subject choice. In addition, they complete a challenging 4000 word piece of research, a mini thesis, as well as completing Theory of Knowledge (ToK), a critical thinking skills course as well as a compulsory Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) component which takes place throughout the two years.
