Exploring AI in Education at BISP

On the 15th of November, 2023, BISP hosted a parent workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education led by ICT Director Nigel Wheeler, Head of Computer Science and Technology Integration Jon Clark, and Year 13 IB students Charlize and Misha. This enlightening presentation delved into the world of AI, highlighting its growing significance in areas such as learning and teaching, and introducing a new chapter of technological innovation in education.

AI: Revolutionising the Classroom

Long a staple of science fiction and academic research, AI has captivated our imagination for decades, with early examples like ELIZA and PARRY and familiar figures from films and TV shows. Today, the buzz around AI is driven by incredible advances in large language models, vast databases, portable processing power, and cutting-edge machine learning developments.

AI’s Role in Education

AI is emerging as a universal tool, reshaping the educational experience for students and bolstering educators’ efforts. The session highlighted AI’s ability to adapt and evolve, underscoring its potential in crafting personalised learning journeys and enhancing the overall efficacy and appeal of education.

The Two Sides of AI in Learning

Charlize and Misha explored from a student’s perspective the nuanced debate surrounding AI in education, addressing its myriad benefits and the challenges it presents. AI’s capabilities for providing instant feedback, aiding with homework, and streamlining tasks were discussed alongside concerns about diminished human interaction, academic integrity, dependency on technology and information accuracy.

Navigating AI with Integrity

The importance of responsible AI usage was a key focus, especially considering the emergence of tools designed to detect AI-generated content. The International Baccalaureate (IB) stance on AI, advocating for proper citation and academic honesty in its usage, was also emphasised.

Unlocking Future Educational Horizons

The session looked forward to the transformative role AI could play in education. These advancements are set to create a more inclusive, engaging, and effective educational landscape.

Adapting to a Changing Educational Landscape

As AI continues to evolve, it’s imperative for students and educators alike to adapt to this technological paradigm shift. BISP is dedicated to navigating these changes, investing in technology integration, training and innovation to equip our teachers and students for a future where AI is seamlessly integrated into everyday life and learning.

We extend our thanks to everyone involved in this session and look forward to our continued journey in harnessing AI in education at BISP.
