No two students learn the same way, chase the same passions, or need the same kind of support, and their education should reflect that. At Leysin American School, we believe that a truly excellent education starts with seeing each student as an individual and a member of our family. That philosophy shapes our class sizes, our advising model, our faculty family mentoring program, and the way we build each student’s academic path.
Small Classes, Bigger Impact
With an average class size of just 10 students and a 1:4 teacher-to-student ratio, classes at Leysin American School are designed for genuine connection. Teachers get to know each student’s strengths, challenges, and interests, which means lessons can be adapted in real time rather than delivered as a one-size-fits-all script. Small classes also mean more room for discussion, more one-on-one feedback, and more confidence for students to ask questions and take intellectual risks.
Flexible Pathways Through Middle School, Prep Years, and Diploma Years
A student’s journey at LAS unfolds in three stages: Middle School (grades 7-8), the Preparatory Years (grades 9-10), and the Diploma Years (grades 11-12). At every stage, our flexible curriculum allows students to mix and match core and exploratory courses, so they can pursue their interests while building the foundation they need for what comes next. Whether a student is drawn to the IB Diploma Programme, Advanced Placement courses, or our English Language Acquisition program, our academic team works with each student to design a pathway suited to their unique goals.
Support That Goes Beyond the Classroom
Because nearly all of our faculty live on campus, guidance doesn’t end when the school day does. Students have access to mentorship and support during evenings and weekends, not just class hours—an important difference for young people navigating a rigorous academic program far from home. This constant access to caring adults means struggles get caught early, questions get answered quickly, and no student falls through the cracks.
Advising That Looks at the Whole Student
At Leysin American School, our philosophy is to guide students in their quest to find the pathway that “best fits” their abilities, interests and needs. From course selection to university applications, our advisors partner with students throughout their time at LAS. Our University Advising team helps each student choose courses that reflect their interests and ambitions, then guides them step-by-step through the college search and application process—resulting in strong outcomes, including acceptances at many of the world’s top universities such as Harvard, Cambridge, and Princeton.
Thoughtful Use of New Tools
Individualized education also means preparing students for the world they’re actually growing up in. At LAS, artificial intelligence is integrated thoughtfully into learning, with a clear framework guiding when and how students may use it. This allows students to benefit from powerful new tools for research, creativity, and problem-solving, while still developing their own authentic thinking and skills.
Every Student, Known and Supported
Every student at Leysin American School is genuinely known and cared for by our community, and because of this they thrive. At LAS, personalized attention is the foundation of our academic programs. From small classes to dedicated advisors to a faculty that lives alongside our students, every part of the Leysin American School experience is designed to help each individual student discover their strengths, pursue their passions, and reach their full potential.
