U-Tech Prep Academy Teachers Share Their Thanksgiving Traditions

During Thanksgiving, the global online community at U-Tech Prep Academy is enriched by the perspectives of teachers and students from diverse cultures across time zones. Thanksgiving in the United States differs in meaning to those who recognize it. For some, Thanksgiving is perceived as one of the most important and perhaps misunderstood days of the year, while Thanksgiving’s history complicates its symbolism for others. Still, the holiday provides an occasion to reflect on gratitude and togetherness.

Thanksgiving offers an opportunity to spend quality time with family in the presence of great food, which is common in every culture. U-Tech Prep science teacher Marissa Ortiz, whose husband’s family is Bolivian, explained, “It feels good to get together with family to share a meal. It allows us space and time to visit our elderly and allow children to play together.” Members of the U-Tech Prep community value cultural exchange, which is why many have participated in exchanges as hosts, students, or exchange teachers. History and art teacher Karl Redmer recounted, “We have hosted exchange students in the past and shared with them the importance of family and gathering around a feast to celebrate our blessings.” Food brings people together worldwide and in every culture.

Thanksgiving is a busy time for many people, and many traditions are incorporated into the holiday. Families often drive across their state and fly over state or national boundaries to gather for food and fun. For some families, Thanksgiving means the start of the Christmas season and involves the excitement of making Christmas lists or even taking the opportunity to celebrate an early Christmas with loved ones who live far away. When asked what Thanksgiving means, English teacher Andrea Allen said, “Food, family, football.” U-Tech Prep Academy is part of the award-winning Jenison School district in Michigan, where Detroit Lions football reigns supreme. Grade six advisor Kyle Cox explained, “A typical tradition is to watch the Detroit Lions play and eat as much pumpkin pie as possible.” Anyone familiar with American football knows that each game offers plenty of time to stretch out and digest a heavy meal. Food is definitely a Thanksgiving focus. Speaking of pumpkin pie, “It’s the best thing on Earth. Also, mashed potatoes – it’s the second best thing on Earth.” Turkey, cornbread stuffing, and sweet potato casserole also score high on the list of traditional Thanksgiving meals.

Thanksgiving brings people together without the stress, anxiety, or pressure of giving gifts.
It is a chance to engage in family activities, volunteer to serve the community, or simply enjoy a little time off from busy schedules. U-Tech Prep Academy is thankful for its excellent teachers, who treat every student as an individual while fostering a community spirit in an online environment.
