At SSIS, we strive to provide excellence in international education—not just through academic achievements, but by empowering our students to use their talents to serve their communities, both locally and globally.
From September 19th to 29th, the First Love service group embarked on a transformative trip to the Philippines, focusing on supporting the Jubilee and Masa Ati schools. This year, 17 students returned to Boracay for the second consecutive year of service. The SSIS group funded a new computer lab at the Masa Ati school by donating laptops, with a goal of reaching 20 devices. Building on last year’s contributions, which included a Science Lab, this initiative will further foster the future success of the children.
Activities and Contributions
In Boracay trip, the group were tasked with both construction works and provision of educational services to the children. Their construction efforts included land leveling and preparing materials for concrete, allowing them to see the tangible results of their labor. Simultaneously, they taught basic Chinese language skills to students of all ages, incorporating fun games like rock painting and musical chairs to enhance the learning experience and foster connections.
The group also emphasized health education, teaching simple first-aid techniques to students who lacked access to healthcare. This component was crucial, as they empowered the students with knowledge about wound care and personal hygiene.
Reflections and Impact
Despite the physical demands of their work, the encouragement and gratitude from local teachers and the community motivated them to push through. Reflecting on their journey, they realized that the trip was more than just service; it was a profound engagement that taught them compassion, perseverance, and the importance of community connections.
Upon returning from Boracay, the participants not only brought back cherished memories but also a renewed commitment to service. Many felt inspired to explore further opportunities for giving back, understanding that even small contributions can make a significant impact. This trip fostered invaluable lessons, deep relationships, and a desire to continue helping others, leaving them forever changed.
