Academics
PreK & Kindergarten
Preschool and Kindergarten are both taught in self-enclosed classrooms. During these years, each classroom has an assigned Subject Expert Teacher Early Childhood Education (SET ECE), a Learning Enhancement Teacher Early Childhood Education (LET ECE) who has earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and who aspires to become an SET ECE, and a dedicated classroom assistant. The SET ECE is responsible for most of the instruction. However, in specialized subjects such as Music and Engineering, a Subject Expert Teacher (SET) may replace the SET ECE.
Grades 1–5
Starting in Grade 1, BASIS Curriculum students are no longer in a self-contained classroom for the full school day. In every subject, an SET who specializes in that subject (Humanities, Math, Science, Engineering, Art, Chinese, etc.) teaches the students. Across all subjects, the Learning Enhancement Teacher (LET), who focuses on effective pedagogy, teaches alongside the SET.
Grades 6–8
In Grades 6-8, BASIS Curriculum students complete rigorous courses in all core subjects, including the three sciences (physics, chemistry, and biology), economics, and a course in logic.
Grades 9–12
By grade 9, BASIS Curriculum students have cultivated the organization and independent work ethic necessary for advanced coursework. Students demonstrate mastery in Honors and AP courses, then further develop their ability to think creatively and critically in post-AP courses.
The culmination of the high school program in BASIS Curriculum Schools is the senior year. Seniors who have gone through the program from middle school benefit from the expertise of their teachers in Capstone courses, equivalent to upper division college courses, with such topics as Biomedical Engineering and Postcolonial Literature. After taking these courses, they then apply their knowledge in a professional or research setting during their Senior Projects.
Connections Curriculum
The BASIS Curriculum’s unique Connections course is an opportunity for students in grades 1–3 to demonstrate ingenuity, teamwork, and mental agility.
Capstone Courses and Senior Projects
Capstone Courses
Our advanced curriculum enables our students to go above and beyond what is traditionally offered in most American schools. 12th grade Capstone courses transition students from student-centered learning to independent learning. Capstone students study subjects like Category Theory, Organic Chemistry, Quantum Mechanics, Differential Equations, Literary Theory, Game Theory and Political Philosophy.
The Senior Project
The BASIS Curriculum cultivates students who are highly engaged, inquisitive and autonomous learners. The Senior Project is the culmination of the BASIS Curriculum.
After three and a half years of intensive academic college preparation, our seniors are ready to spend the last trimester of their high school careers applying what they have learned in previous years to an independent project that allows them to explore their individual path of learning, their passion and their potential future course of study.
Extra curricular
In its wide-ranging extracurricular program, BASIS International School Nanjing offers a total of 50 ASA’s for students to explore their hobbies in multiple fields such as art, science, and sports etc.
Clubs
BASIS International Schools promotes the idea of an all-round education. Our students are encouraged to join a full range of clubs to cultivate life-long hobbies and get inspiration for their future study. Outside of the classroom, clubs provide our students a great opportunity to dip into the fields of Arts and Humanities, Sports and Competitions, Games and Innovations, Science and Technology, Economics and Finance, Social Practice, etc. Led by professional instructors, club members have the chances to participate in competitions at regional and international level, when they demonstrate outstanding qualifications and magnetic personalities. All the awards and honors achieved were the fruits of our students’ persistence and diligence, and will be the compelling highlights for their college application.
Field Trips
BASIS International Schools provide a wide range of field trips including on-site investigation, camping and picnic, games and competitions, teamwork practice and gratitude education. Through these activities, our students become more independent, curious, disciplined, optimistic and generous, harnessing good personal qualities. For PreK and kindergarten students, field trips help to foster their outdoor safety awareness and encourage them to explore academic interests outside of the classroom. As for students of upper grades, they have rewarding opportunities to interact with professionals in enterprises or prestigious university labs and are expected to develop a sense of collaboration and the spirit of self-challenge.
Boarding
BASIS International School Nanjing offers two options for day school and boarding system. PreK-1 to G4 students can only choose day school; G5-G12 students can choose day school or boarding. The school provides boarding students with five days of boarding from Sunday evening to Thursday evening. Students go back home after school on Fridays and return to school on Sunday afternoons.
BASIS International School Nanjing offers 418 spots for boarding students. Like other BASIS International Schools with a boarding option, it is equipped with a professional dorm parent team to support our boarding students’ dormitory needs. Since our school begins, the Boarding Management Department has held various events and competitions such as the Boarding House Competition, Boarding Talent Show, Boarding Decoration Competition, Latin Dance Workshop and Mid-Autumn Festival Party. Students enhance their friendship and develop a sense of belongings through these interesting extra-curriculum experiences. The Boarding Department founded the Student Mental Health Center as a counseling service to support our students with everyday problems. Student Mental Health Center has a conversation consultation area and a sandbox game area to meet the counseling needs of students of all ages. In the counseling room, students can express their feelings and thoughts to the consultant through speech or game. Two counselors from Nanjing Normal University and Wuhan University with Psychology degrees will give positive and properly received responses, fostering the wellbeing of all students.
