We are very excited about what is on the horizon for this upcoming semester at Leysin American School! Our ski program, outdoor adventures, family events, cultural trips, the school musical, athletics, fine art shows, and international service opportunities all provide fantastic opportunities for personal growth, fun, and making memories that will last a lifetime. Read below to learn more about what our students can experience and enjoy:
Skiing and Snowboarding Program
Not only do students get to enjoy the view of majestic mountain peaks every day, within minutes they have access to world class skiing and snowboarding right in our own village of Leysin. Bluebird skies, sweeping Alpine vistas, excellent snow conditions and diverse trail offerings make skiing and snowboarding in Leysin a true delight. Whether you’re an experienced skier or snowboarder or putting on your boots for the first time, the LAS program supports each and every student with personalized instruction and guidance so that they are confident in their abilities and have the time of their lives exploring the gorgeous slopes and vistas right in our own backyard.
Alpine Institute Adventures
The Alpine Institute offers opportunities for everyone to enjoy additional winter activities such as sledding, ice skating, and even guided off-piste ski touring for the advanced skiers. Some of their trips extend beyond our local area to iconic winter sport locations such as the Jungfrau and Flims/Laax regions. There is truly a world-class winter adventure available for everyone.
Family Winter Week
The annual LAS Family Winter Week will bring together students, staff, and families from around the world to celebrate our international community. This event allows parents to meet with teachers and staff in person so they can ask questions and gain more knowledge about the learning and development their children experience in and outside of the classroom. It’s a fun and meaningful way for the other families to connect with each other as well. Also, many families take advantage of being on campus during the magical winter season and have a wonderful time skiing with their children on the nearby slopes! Family Winter Week is a very special time for us and we can’t wait to welcome families back to Leysin soon.
Travel
This semester has more travel opportunities than ever! The signature LAS spring culturals offer students extraordinary opportunities to visit world-famous historical sites, lectures, museum tours, cooking classes and cultural exchanges in beautiful locations in Italy, France, Portugal, Croatia, Malta, and Greece. Organized according to grade level, these trips are a wonderful opportunity for students to solidify bonds with their classmates by exploring and learning together. We also have weekend and spring break trips to Venice, the Cote d’Azur, the Greek Isles, and Thailand. When we talk to students about their favorite LAS memories, many of them mention the LAS trips that they have taken. Snapping a selfie in front of the Parthenon, making pasta in Sicily, or parasailing in Croatia, all while you are with your best friends, are what lifelong and magical memories are made of!
Zimbabwe and China Service Trips
Students who want to make a difference in the world can participate in one of two service trips offered this semester. Our wonderful Zimbabwe service trip has been running for over a decade and has proven to be life changing for our students. Because of this success we have decided to offer an additional service trip to rural China. Both the Zimbabwe and China trips will enable students to give back through meaningful service work, learn about different cultures, deepen their sense of responsibility, feel empowered, and become more globally-minded.
LAS IB Art Exhibition and The Little Mermaid Musical
As a community that celebrates the arts, the LAS IB Art Exhibition will once again highlight our students’ incredible talent and creativity. This exhibition showcases months of hard work, artistic growth, and expression done through a very challenging, thorough, and introspective creative process. In addition, our student production of the musical The Little Mermaid will be performed in February. We can’t wait to witness our incredible and diverse talents of our students!
Cowbell Games: Athletic Triumphs and Team Spirit
The LAS Cowbell Games will return this semester, bringing together students in a week-long schedule of teamwork, fun and silly activities, and ample laughter. Whether participating in events or cheering others on, students will experience the excitement that makes the Cowbell Games such a beloved tradition at LAS!
Prom
As the upcoming semester ends, students can enjoy a glamorous evening of celebration at our prom. The younger students of grades 7-10 will enjoy the elegant Belle Époque Grande Salle and grades 11 and 12 will gather in the local Chateau d’Aigle and student committees design the themes for the invitations, decorations and activities. Beautiful settings, festival lighting, balloons, streamers, flowers, twinkling lights, and students in formal wear all make this night unforgettable.
This semester at Leysin American School will be full of adventure, creativity, culture, learning, and connection. Whether students are skiing down the slopes, showcasing their artistic talents, exploring iconic sites of Europe, or giving back through service work, they will thrive, have the time of their lives, and become the best versions of themselves.
