Little Shop of Horrors – An Outstanding SSIS Production

Our 2024 high school production of “Little Shop of Horrors”, held from December 5 to 7, has been a tremendous success. This show represents a significant undertaking, being one of the most musically complex pieces we’ve ever staged. Our students fully embraced the spirit of the production, bringing their own flair and passion to every performance. “Little Shop of Horrors” is a challenging musical that requires strong singing and acting skills, blending humor with heartfelt emotion. The cast and crew were ready for this challenge, and the audience was captivated throughout the show.

This year’s production featured 18 cast members from grades 9 to 12, with a notable number of newcomers. In addition to the cast, 2 assistant directors from the DP Theatre class and 2 student choreographers played crucial roles in the production, demonstrating remarkable leadership and creativity.

The live music accompaniment, performed by student musicians, added an extra layer of authenticity to the performances. These dedicated musicians began their preparations before the summer holiday, highlighting their commitment to the project.

On design wise, the students took on unique challenges, especially the task of building four different puppet stages for the plant. This was something we had never done before and required exceptional teamwork and creativity.

Ms. Kimberly Jones, the production director, expressed her pride in the students, stating, “The music, the choreography, the design – it’s all a huge challenge. It’s been a delight working with this talented team of students and teachers to put together this heartfelt, wacky show. I’m incredibly grateful to work at a school that values and support performing arts. I also want to extend my gratitude to all the members of the faculty who were involved. Theatre is an act of collaboration, and none of this would have been possible without the musicians, the tech and design crews, the graphic design students, and the teachers who supported them throughout. My goal has always been to provide the students as close to a professional experience as possible, and this year I think we really hit that mark.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in this blooming success!
