In the following text, Mr. Wayne May shares insights into the German initiative “Gesund macht Schule” (“Healthy Schools”) and explains how structured health education can help shape healthier, more resilient generations.

Empowering Healthy Futures Through Education

In an increasingly complex and fast-paced world, schools are uniquely positioned not only to foster academic excellence but also to cultivate lifelong well-being. Across Germany, the initiative “Gesund macht Schule” (“Healthy Schools”) stands as a compelling example of how educational systems can successfully integrate structured health promotion into everyday learning. By embedding health literacy into primary education, the program contributes to the development of healthier, more resilient generations.

Launched in 1997, “Gesund macht Schule” (“Healthy Schools”) was designed specifically for primary schools and operates at the intersection of education and healthcare—two sectors that often function independently yet share a common objective: improving children’s long-term outcomes. The initiative supports teachers, students, parents, and healthcare professionals in building sustainable health awareness from an early age.

A Comprehensive, Age-Appropriate Curriculum

The program offers hands-on, developmentally appropriate learning modules that address key dimensions of physical, emotional, and social health. In the area of food and nutrition, students gain foundational knowledge about different food groups, essential nutrients, digestion, and hygiene in food preparation, while also learning about the cultural aspects of shared meals. In the area of movement and relaxation, the initiative promotes regular physical activity, motor skill development, and the enjoyment of exercise, and it introduces relaxation techniques that support both physical and mental balance. When learning about the human body and visiting the doctor, children explore basic anatomy, the senses, and body awareness, and they are supported in reducing anxiety associated with medical appointments. Through sexual education, age-appropriate discussions address body awareness, gender roles, emotions, friendships, and family diversity in a respectful and inclusive manner. In the area of self-strengthening and addiction prevention, the program places emphasis on building self-confidence, social competence, conflict resolution skills, and responsible decision-making.

A Systemic and Collaborative Approach

A distinguishing strength of “Gesund macht Schule” (“Healthy Schools”) lies in its systemic design. Rather than offering isolated workshops or temporary campaigns, the initiative embeds health education sustainably within the school structure.

Teachers receive curriculum-aligned teaching materials that support them in integrating health topics into their lessons in a structured and engaging way. They also benefit from professional development workshops that equip them with the knowledge and confidence to address health-related content effectively. In addition, they are provided with practical toolkits that make it easier to implement health promotion activities in everyday classroom practice.

Parents are actively engaged through information sessions and educational resources, which help them to reinforce healthy behaviours within the home environment. This triangular partnership—school, family, and healthcare provider—creates consistency, strengthens community bonds, and enhances the long-term effectiveness of health promotion efforts.

Measurable Impact

Numerous participating primary schools across Germany report tangible outcomes. They observe increased health awareness among students and noticeable improvements in health-related behaviours. Schools also experience stronger partnerships between the school community and external stakeholders, and teachers report greater confidence in delivering health education. These results demonstrate that structured health education is not peripheral to academic success; rather, it is foundational to it.

Investing in the Future

Looking ahead, we at ISR firmly believe that investing in health literacy is no longer optional—it is essential. Physical and mental well-being form the foundation of academic performance, social development, and lifelong achievement. By prioritizing student health within our educational framework, we are committed to cultivating generations who are not only knowledgeable, but also resilient, self-aware, and empowered to make informed and responsible choices.

“Gesund macht Schule” (“Healthy Schools”) illustrates how thoughtful collaboration between education and healthcare can transform schools into environments where healthy futures are not merely envisioned but actively built.
