At Suzhou Singapore International School (SSIS), the German program has been implemented since 2007 to address the necessity to offer comprehensive education aligned with the German curriculum for the the German-speaking community in Suzhou. SSIS stands as the only school in Suzhou offering a comprehensive German program that meets the standards of the German education system, this program also facilitates a seamless transition for students returning to Germany and entering the German education system.
A Well-rounded education
The German program at SSIS offers a well-rounded education to students from Kindergarten to Grade 4. By combining the German curriculum with the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, students benefit from an enriched learning experience in a multilingual environment. The German curriculum covers all core subjects, including Mathematics, German language and Social Sciences, fostering a holistic approach to education. While the core subjects are taught in German, our students also participate in other subjects like Music, Art, Physical Education and Performing Arts, which follow the IB program and are taught in English. Additionally, all students participate daily in English language and Chinese lessons.
After completion of the German program at the end of grade 4, students have the option to continue with daily German lessons until grade 12. They focus on further development of their proficiency in German through studies in literature, deepening their understanding of German culture. The remaining subjects are instructed in English and Chinese. The experience of learning in a multilingual environment has proven to be highly beneficial for the students.
Utilizing Domestic Curriculum and Teaching Materials:
To ensure the highest quality of education, SSIS utilizes domestic curriculum and teaching materials sourced directly from Germany. Teachers follow a well-structured curriculum with textbooks and workbooks available for German, English, and Mathematics. The German textbooks are divided into different sections, focusing on grammar, language development, writing, and reading. Additionally, there are homework books to reinforce learning outside of the classroom.
We place great emphasis on providing ample opportunities for students to practice and strengthen their German language skills through engaging reading and writing exercises. This aspect is particularly significant for students coming from mixed cultural backgrounds, where English is predominantly spoken at home. By fostering a supportive and immersive environment, we encourage students to excel in German language proficiency, bridging the gap between their home and academic life.
Maintaining Strong Connections to German Roots:
The German program at SSIS goes beyond regular knowledge acquisition, it aims to deepen students’ cultural knowledge and academic abilities. Through a range of cultural events and activities, students increase their understanding of German traditions, customs, and history. These experiences not only enhance language skills but also foster a sense of pride and connection to German culture. SSIS organizes various cultural events throughout the year, creating a vibrant and inclusive community where students can celebrate their German heritage while embracing the diversity of the international school environment.
The German program at SSIS offers German students in Suzhou an outstanding educational opportunity. It provides a comprehensive education that not only nurtures their academic growth but also prepares them for a successful academic journey anywhere they decide to continue their education, in Germany or anywhere else in the world.
