Wendover Online School’s Ofsted Report and accreditation by the DfE give parents independent reassurance on teaching, safeguarding, flexibility and pupil wellbeing.

“We’re delighted to have received such a glowing Report from Ofsted,” says Sarah Bacon, founder of Wendover Online School. “This external scrutiny from the Department for Education brings the rigour of ISI and Ofsted inspections for bricks-and-mortar schools to online education.”
Wendover is now formally accredited by the Department for Education as an Online Education Provider. The supporting Ofsted Report gives parents reassurance on the strength of our online school’s teaching, relationships, safeguarding and flexible approach to learning – describing Wendover as ‘a powerhouse of learning’ where pupils ‘thrive and achieve very well.’

Ofsted’s key findings

The Report confirms that Wendover meets the standards for accreditation in online education set out by the Department for Education (DfE). It also goes much further in praise of the school, highlighting that:

  • Staff provide individualised teaching and dedicated, knowledgeable and engaging support to pupils
  • Pupils flourish in this nurturing environment
  • Teachers forge strong relationships with their pupils and, as a result, pupils feel confident to play an active role in lessons
  • Pupils thrive and achieve very well
  • Leaders demonstrate a highly flexible approach to timetabling
  • Safeguarding is a priority.

Online education expertise

As one of the first schools in the UK designed specifically to educate pupils online, Wendover was at the forefront of the development of the system of external review to audit academic quality, pupil welfare and leadership in online schools.

Sarah Bacon and Wendover’s senior leaders participated in the DfE’s consultation process in 2019-2020 ahead of the establishment of the Online Education Accreditation Scheme (OEAS) in 2023. The OEAS sets out key standards for providers of online education, and schools applying for accreditation must be inspected by Ofsted, the quality assurance body for the Scheme. Accreditation is not compulsory, but as Wendover holds itself to high standards and seeks continuous improvement, the staff and leadership team voluntarily invested in this critical assessment over the course of two intensive days in February 2026.

How Wendover helps build student confidence

Wendover’s ethos is to encourage confidence: pupils learn in small groups or private (individual or 1-2-1) lessons, where teachers can build a relationship with each child and help them to be active learners. Ofsted supports this approach, acknowledging that Wendover teachers have taken the time to forge strong relationships with their pupils and, as a result, pupils feel confident to play an active role in lessons.

“Teachers skilfully use a range of approaches which enable pupils to acquire a deep understanding of the concepts being taught, as well as the ability to think critically and apply their knowledge and skills when exploring new learning.” (Ofsted, 2026)

What Ofsted found about individual learning

With small class sizes, teachers can also tailor lessons to ensure that each child learns at the appropriate pace and level. From Primary lessons to A-level, including overseas pupils, those like elite athletes with extra-curricular commitments, and across a range of ability, this is recognised by Ofsted as a winning approach. The Report confirms that Wendover staff provide individualised teaching and dedicated, knowledgeable and engaging support to pupils, with the result that “Pupils flourish in this nurturing environment.” (Ofsted, 2026)

Ofsted praises skilled teachers

Principal Sarah Thomas is proud of the high quality of teaching at Wendover. “Ofsted found that our teachers skilfully use a range of teaching approaches, enabling pupils to acquire a deep understanding of the concepts being taught, as well as the ability to think critically and apply their knowledge and skills when exploring new learning. Our online setting is particularly effective in this individualised approach, since the teachers can see what each student is doing during live lessons, and can adapt as they go.”

The Report also notes the wide range of resources used by Wendover’s teachers to make lessons fully interactive, including the use of simulation software to explore practical elements of the science curriculum, and the use of a range of media such as portfolios and videos.

What the report says about life beyond lessons

During their accreditation visit, inspectors were as interested in the extra-curricular activities available to Wendover’s online students as they were in the “extensive opportunities for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.” (Ofsted, 2026)

Parents sometimes worry that online schools cannot provide such activities, but as the Report notes, Wendover provides pupils with regular assemblies and group tutorials, as well as “opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities, including various after-school clubs such as baking and chess, and by contributing to the school newsletter. Recent highlights mentioned by pupils, parents and staff alike were the school Nativity performance and a visit to Bletchley Park.” (Ofsted, 2026)

How safeguarding and wellbeing are supported

For any parent, safeguarding will always be one of the most important areas of school life. In an online setting, families need to know that systems are secure, staff are well trained and children are properly supported. See Wendover’s Safeguarding Policy and related documents here.

His Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI) noted with approval Wendover’s strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding procedures, and the rigorous and effective processes and systems that ensure pupils and staff can work securely and safely in this online environment.

How Wendover prepares pupils for life beyond school

The leadership team at Wendover has always been keen to ensure that pupils benefit from learning that will serve them throughout their lives. In addition to fostering a supportive environment where it is safe to take risks in learning, the Ofsted Report notes that the school provides opportunities to take responsibility and prepare for leadership roles.

Thanks to a “highly flexible approach to timetabling,” students have the freedom to pursue sporting, musical or other hobbies outside school, whilst staff have also “put in place a structured and impartial careers programme that supports older pupils in their next steps of education, training and employment.” (Ofsted, 2026)

Pupils at Wendover “thrive and achieve very well”

With over 40 years’ experience, over 10 of which are in online teaching, Founder Sarah Bacon believes that Wendover Online School is leading the way in online education in Britain. “Parents will be reassured that the Ofsted Report and DfE accreditation recognise that the high quality of relationships between staff, pupils and parents is a significant strength of our school community, and that as a result, pupils thrive and achieve very well.”
Pupils painted an “overwhelmingly positive” picture of the school to HMI and were “extremely positive” about attitudes to learning. One parent told inspectors: ‘Wendover is an amazing school with outstanding teachers and leadership. It’s an educational gem!” (Ofsted, 2026)

Sarah concludes: “Huge thanks go to our students and their parents, who trust us with their education and development. Our teachers and the whole team at Wendover work hard to help your children grow and thrive, and we will continue to push ourselves to ensure that every child benefits from personalised learning in a safe and nurturing environment.”
