Forest Learning at The International School of Brussels: looking at nature through a mathematical lens

Children exploring nature during outdoor school activity in autumn forest.

Young children strive to understand the world around them, and forests provide endless opportunities for learning and exploration. In this story, Ms. Ruxandra Filip and her Grade 1 students welcomed us to watch how they rethink their surroundings during their Forest Math class.

  • Forming small groups, students selected the elements in nature from which they wanted to collect data.
  • After that, each group gathered the elements from their members at the table as a visual guide.
  • Moving forward, groups created a dashboard showcasing their findings.
  • Finally, they photographed their dashboards and elements to continue the Math Class indoors.

At ISB , the forest is now also an outdoor classroom, as our campus is surrounded by the beautiful Foret de Soignes in the south of Brussels.
