Explore the Art of Chinese Shadow Puppetry

In connection with our learning, SSIS elementary students experienced the ancient art of Chinese shadow puppetry. A professional puppeteer, Mr.Teng, presented culturally rich shows, bringing to life stories from Chinese folklore. This traditional art form, known as “皮影戏 (pi ying xi),” dates back over two thousand years, preserving tales and values from the Han Dynasty. Chinese shadow puppetry is more than entertainment; it’s an inspiring window into Chinese history and culture. Students of all ages were able to enjoy vibrant performances while gaining insights into traditional beliefs and customs. This visit offered a chance for students to connect their learning throughout reading, writing, and their units of inquiry with real-world cultural experiences, fostering a deeper appreciation for Chinese heritage.

Students were able to make connections to their writing units of “Writing Fiction”, multiple reading units across various grades, and the “How We Express Ourselves” and “Where We Are in Place and Time” units of inquiry.

After the exciting performances, students engaged with Mr.Teng, learned about puppet craftsmanship, and were able to have some hands-on experience with using the professional puppets. This experience enhanced our students’ understanding of Chinese traditions and fostered global citizenship, ensuring the survival of this ancient art form.
