Academics

ISU teachers use the best research-based teaching methods centered on a dynamic international curriculum that meets a global standard for the best education available, the widely acclaimed and highly respected International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes. In the Junior School, Early Childhood to grade 5, the curriculum is based on the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). While providing a strong foundation in all subject areas, the programme focuses on the social, physical, emotional and cultural development of the child. It provides structured inquiry as a vehicle for learning which is carried forward in the other two IB programmes. In the Senior School, the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) forms the core of ISU’s educational focus for students in grades 6 to 10. The inter-disciplinary approach to learning develops students’ critical thinking abilities and communication skills and offers an academically challenging and stimulating programme of study. In grades 11 and 12 students follow the IB Diploma Programme (DP). Considered the leading edge of secondary education today and the “gold standard” of high school diplomas, this programme of study allows students to expand their horizons and challenge their abilities.  ISU has a specialist centre for teaching English as an Additional Languages (EAL) and a Learning Support (LS) Centre for those students with special needs and who are gifted and talented. Both centres serve students of all ages. Through our Sports and Activities Programme students build self-esteem, become motivated learners, practice time management skills, form many friendships and gain a greater identity with our school.

Overview

The International School of Uganda (ISU), formerly known as Lincoln International School, is located on a green 33-acre purpose-built campus in the quiet Kampala neighborhood of Lubowa. It has been at the forefront of international education in Uganda for over 52 years.

ISU is a not-for-profit school, governed by a board of directors, which comprised of seven elected members and two appointed members. We are continuously reinvesting in our students, educational programmes, staff and campus. We offer the following prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes: • Primary Years Programme (PYP) for ages 3 to 11 years; • Middle Years Programme (MYP) for ages 11 to 16 years; and • Diploma Programme (DP) for ages 16 to 19 years. Early Childhood accepts children from the age of 2.5 years. Our facilities include four fully equipped, state of the art science laboratories, three computer laboratories with access to the internet and wireless connectivity campus-wide, a library of 25,000 volumes, two sports fields, sports hall, 400m track, two swimming pools, four tennis courts and separate facilities for Early Childhood education. The school is currently constructing an Arts Centre which will contain classrooms for music, visual arts, dance and drama as well as a 450-seat auditorium. This is expected to be finished in 2020.

To mold balanced individuals, students participate in a range of after school activities. They participate in local (ISSAK) and international (ISSEA) sports and arts events, and are involved in service activities at school and the wider community. ISU founded the Ugandan chapter of Model United Nations (MUN) and has hosted it for the last five years. ISU is an inclusive school, meaning we provide learning support for students with special needs, gifted and talented students. We have support in the regular classrooms for them, and also have special classes where we work on skills they may be having trouble with. We also provide support for students who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Self-Selection into the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme – all grade 11 and 12 students take Diploma subjects and are encouraged to try the full IB Diploma. If students do not complete the internal assessments or miss crucial deadlines they are counselled into the IB certificate course. All graduating students receive an ISU Diploma which is validated by both the Middles States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council of International Schools.

Our College Counsellor works with students and their parents to help guide them through the college application process. The majority of ISU graduates go to universities in the US or the UK. ISU’s international community consists of over 530 students comprising of over 50 different nationalities. ISU has 65 full-time qualified and experienced teachers, from around the world including Uganda. Almost half of the teachers hold Masters or other postgraduate degrees.

ISU runs 17 different bus routes to transport students from all over Kampala and Entebbe. We are convinced that all students can achieve beyond their expectations through being challenged, working hard and with the faculty’s belief in their ability to do so. We learn together to unlock opportunities, for our students, in an ever-changing world. If you want your child to succeed in education, choose a school that demonstrates successful admission to great universities. If you want your child to succeed in life, choose the IB. ISU offers three types of scholarships and financial assistance for self-paying families. Visitors are always welcome to the campus.
