From Code to Adventure: Year 7’s Game Development Journey

Year 7 students have been game developers this term. Utilizing the popular programming language Scratch, they delved into the fundamentals of game creation, focusing on key concepts like collision detection, game variables, and conditional statements. Building upon this foundational knowledge, the students were presented with a challenge: to design and develop a unique pirate-themed game for Year 1 students. This project pushed them to integrate their acquired skills while incorporating additional complexities such as player navigation using coordinates, grids, and compass points.

Last Tuesday, the culmination of their efforts was unveiled as the Year 7 ‘developers’ proudly showcased their innovative games to their enthusiastic Year 1 ‘customers’. The event was a resounding success, filled with laughter, excitement, and a palpable sense of accomplishment.

This interactive experience provided the Year 7 students with a valuable opportunity to apply their learning in a real-world context. They gained experience in project based learning, problem-solving and the importance of testing and delivery.
