How One Student is Shaping a Greener Future at J. Addison School

At J. Addison School in Canada, we believe in fostering curiosity and developing global citizens ready to shape a better world. For Grade 11 international student Johan W., this journey began with a desire for deeper academic opportunity and hands-on learning in the field of science and technology.

Originally from Hong Kong, Johan joined J. Addison after discovering he could not take physics in his overcrowded local school. “I came here for a change and a chance to pursue the subjects I’m passionate about,” Johan shared.

Shortly after enrolling, Johan volunteered with the Vibrant Markham Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to building stronger, more inclusive communities. Through this, he was invited to showcase an innovative AI-powered Intelligent Heliostat at the Milliken Mills Library in celebration of Earth Day. Inspired by the natural movements of plants, this device uses A.I. to lean solar panels towards the sun, maximizing energy collection, and promoting a greener planet!

“This project showed me how technology and artificial intelligence can solve real-world problems,” Johan said. “Seeing our prototype move toward an iPhone flashlight was incredible. It reminded me that innovation can be both smart and simple.”

At J. Addison, students are encouraged to explore their passions through experiential learning, leadership, and global engagement. Guided by values of Respect, Kindness, and Manner, we support students like Johan in becoming the leaders of tomorrow.
