Sharing cultures, one meal at a time

Eating well is closely linked to better concentration, sustained energy levels, and overall well-being — all essential ingredients for academic success and happiness.

In today’s globalized world, teaching children about healthy eating is more important than ever. At Smiling International School, we see food education as an essential part of nurturing not only healthy bodies, but also curious, independent, and culturally aware minds.

Nestled in the north of Italy, our school is uniquely positioned to combine the richness of Italian food culture with the diverse tastes and backgrounds of our international community.

A Balanced, Mediterranean-Inspired Approach

Our approach to food is rooted in the principles of the Mediterranean diet, widely recognized for its health benefits and its focus on fresh, seasonal, and minimally processed ingredients. Our daily menus include:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains and legumes
  • Olive oil as the primary source of fat
  • Nuts, seeds, fish and dairy

This balanced approach supports heart health, cognitive function, and overall vitality — helping students stay focused and energized throughout the day.

Our expert kitchen staff carefully plans each menu, thoughtfully combining ingredients to meet students’ nutritional needs while offering variety, color, and taste. It’s more than just lunch — it’s a learning experience on every plate.

A Taste of the World, Served with Curiosity

Being part of an international school means that our tables are also cultural meeting points. Food becomes a bridge between traditions — a place where students can share their favorite dishes from home, learn about ingredients from around the world, and discover the nutritional wisdom behind global cuisines.

Through food education, we foster respect, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for diversity. It’s an opportunity to celebrate where we come from — and explore where we can go.

Lunchtime as a Learning Space

Mealtime at Smiling International School isn’t just about eating — it’s a moment for growth, independence, and social learning. As students sit together, they learn to:

  • Respect different eating habits and traditions
  • Make thoughtful choices about what they eat
  • Develop table manners and communication skills

We also encourage student involvement and creativity. From time to time, students help choose the menu for the day — designing balanced meals that reflect their tastes and ideas. It’s a fun and empowering way to apply what they’ve learned about nutrition.

In addition, we host “World Menu Days,” where students have the chance to taste and explore traditional meals from different countries — turning lunch into a global adventure.

Every January, for example, we celebrate the Chinese New year by preparing spring rolls, sweet and sour pork ribs and stir-fried taro. Students always enjoy eating Scary Pizza, Crazy Spiders, Stewed Brains and Monster Pumpkin during Halloween and they like tasting traditional meals such as the Thanksgiving lunch or spicy and flavoured Tacos for Cinco de Mayo!

Families as Partners in Food Education

We know that healthy habits start at school — but thrive when supported at home. That’s why we regularly involve families in our food education journey, sharing meals during our get together events.

Together, we’re building a supportive, holistic environment where children can flourish — physically, emotionally, and socially and that’s what makes our community so rich and special.
