Academique
From the very beginning, boys are encouraged to develop their intellectual curiosity, allowing them to stretch and challenge themselves. Across all ages, the curriculum covers the following areas, each led by a faculty head: linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological, human and social, as well as physical, aesthetic, and creative. Since we are a Catholic school, 10% of curriculum time is dedicated to Religious Education. This subject has a broad focus, with areas including liturgical worship, scripture, and history of the Church.
Activités extrascolaires
Enriching extracurriculars are integral to our core educational programme, nurturing confident, well-rounded students who flourish in class and out. We offer numerous activities to suit all interests, from elite team and solo sports to the performing arts and more.
Athletic clubs take place at the main school site before and after school all year round. Learners may choose from a range of sports options, from football and rugby to cricket, table-tennis, basketball, swimming and dance. Art and drama clubs are in high demand, as our students prepare for performances and exhibitions which are highlights of our school calendar.
Sports
Beyond the Swimming, Games and Physical Education sessions that make up our core curriculum, learners take part in daily sports activities, from football and swimming to rugby, cricket, squash and tennis. We have a ‘Sport for All’ ethos, whereby every boy from Years 4 to 8 participates in competitive sport against other schools.
Success in sports is encouraged and recognised. Our boys earn top accolades in team and solo activities, with recent highlights that include National Sailing Champion, Bedford School Cricket Sixes Bowl Winners, St. Martin’s Futsal Finalists, IAPS National Table Tennis Finalist, multiple U11 Cross-Country wins, U11 Regional ISFA Football Finalists, Gold Medals at both the IAPS and Catholic Schools Athletics, and two sport scholarships to Mill Hill and London day schools.
Performing and Creative Arts
These clubs give learners the chance to develop and showcase their creativity, whether in music, drama or visual arts. Singing is very popular: we offer numerous choirs, including a mixed one with St. Anthony’s Girls’, and boys accompany the celebration of Holy Mass by drawing on a range of choral and polyphonic settings. Individual instrumental tuition is available, and boys are prepared by our talented teachers to excel in their ABRSM practical and theory exams. Musical aptitude is very strong, and each year a number of pupils secure Grade 5 theory before taking practical exams in Grades 6, 7 and 8.
Enrichment
Academic enrichment ranges from maths clinics, which help prepare boys for a variety of competitions, to bespoke support sessions in core subjects. A number of pupils attend dedicated sessions aimed at preparing for the senior school scholarship exams. Cultural enrichment includes sessions like Eco-Warriors, which encourages boys to consider the environment and how to make the world a more sustainable place to live in.
Pupil Voice allows boys to build leadership and organisational skills. The Student Council meets regularly, and their insights and suggestions inform charitable fundraising, efforts to foster a ‘greener’ school and updates to the lunch menu, among other things. Boys take Student Council elections very seriously, and whole-school leaders’ debates are held prior to appointing the student leadership team.
